Seoul District Court issued an arrest warrant yesterday for a 24-year old man who threw his six-year old son and five-year old daughter off Dongjak Bridge into the Han River on Friday night.
Emergency rescue teams and police discovered the bodies at the bottom of the river on Saturday, 20 meters from where they were first thrown in. The children were only wearing T-shirts and were frozen stiff, but did not have any other wounds.
The father, identified only as Mr. Lee, apparently decided to kill his children after running up 35 million won ($29,000) in gambling debts. "I wanted my children to live in the other world with no hardships," he said.
In recent months there has been a spate of similar incidents. Police say that 12 such cases have been reported since July, resulting in child casualties of 23.
