A Minnesota man is accused of sending his wife across the country and ordering her to have sex with men after arranging the encounters online.
Clinton Danner, 32, was arrested in downtown Chicago Sunday night as he arrived to pick up his wife from a hotel where "he made her stay for the weekend," the sheriff's office said.
The woman has told officials Danner regularly threatened he would take away their child or harm the child if she did not comply with his demands, the office said. Danner never allowed the woman to be left alone with the child, it said.
She told investigators she had been trafficked to eight states, with her husband regularly posting ads on Craigslist, promoting her for sex, the office said. Danner would arrange the encounters, then demand that the woman immediately deposit all proceeds into his bank account.
"She said she had tried leaving him before, but was unsuccessful," the office said.
The wife reached out to the Polaris Project's national trafficking hotline for help last week, saying her husband would have to spend the weekend in Chicago having sex with strangers, and that she was "tired of being threatened and being moved across state lines for sex acts," the office said.
Hotline officials in turn reached out to the Cook County sheriff's Department of Women's Justice Services. The woman was initially reluctant to work with the department and spent the weekend carrying out some of her husband's orders, the sheriff's office said.
Danner was in contact with the woman all weekend, setting up appointments, but she told him she wasn't doing some of them because she was sick, the sheriff's office said. That led Danner to drive to Chicago, where he planned to confront her about the amount of money she had collected for him, the office said.
"He had originally planned for her to fly home Monday (but) he told her in a phone call that he was very disappointed in the amount of money she had collected during the weekend and was personally driving up to get her so he could express that disappointment," the office said.
The woman the agreed to work with the sheriff's office, it said.
Cook County sheriff's Police began following Danner as he drove from Florida, where he had forced his wife to work last week, the office said. When he arrived at the hotel around 10 p.m. Sunday, he was arrested and the child he brought with him was turned over to the woman.
Both the woman and child were placed in safe housing, the office said, and "are being kept in a safe location."
Dannon, of Rockford, Minn. is charged with pandering was ordered held on $150,000 bail today.
