Democrats are the only ones that are taking things and then turning out in droves to re elect those handing things out - problem is the crumbs they just ensure they never advance and need the crumbs their entire life - like one of my Sec 8 tenants told me after she was kicked out of the program - "I gots rights - day just can't kick me out - I'm a vet" - she did not mean United States Veteran - she meant veteran of Fort Lauderdale HUD
able body welfare recipients should be made to work in some fashion
neighborhood watch groups , clean your neighborhood, clean roadways and highways, provide daycare services, work for children activities, clean maintain paint public housing...........................
there are scores of ways to make them contribute to society, they can be compensated somewhat based on what service they provide, there would be required over-site for many services (hell, have their probation officers check in on them

two thoughts....
i think most would consider me to be a "liberal" as I vote mostly based on social issues (personal freedom, separation of church and state), but I think this makes a lot of sense....as long as people still have some time to look for a job, what are the real downsides of what Maine has done? i would support politicians from any party that pushed programs like this as long as they keep religion out of my schools, protect personal rights, do not support discrimination, etc.
