Magic's Lewis fails drug test, must sit 10 games

NEW YORK (AP) - Orlando Magic forward Rashard Lewis tested positive for an elevated testosterone level and was suspended Thursday for 10 games.

Lewis said in a statement that he took an over-the-counter supplement late last season that included a substance he did not realize was banned by the NBA.

"First and foremost I take full responsibility for the situation and accept the corresponding penalty," Lewis said. "I apologize to Magic fans, my teammates and this organization for not doing the research that should come with good judgment."
He will be suspended without pay for the first 10 regular-season games for which he is eligible and physically able to play. He will be docked about $1.6 million of his $18 million salary for the 2009-10 season. The first game he could play would be Nov. 16 at home against Charlotte. He will miss Orlando's first game against Cleveland, the team the Magic upset in the Eastern Conference finals.

The Orlando Sentinel first reported the positive test Thursday. Citing unidentified league sources, the newspaper reported the supplement contained DHEA, a steroids precursor.
Lewis is the sixth player to test positive for performance-enhancing drugs since the league began testing in 1999.
"I hope every athlete can learn from my mistake that supplements, no matter how innocent they seem, should only be taken after consulting an expert in the field," Lewis said in his statement. Lewis' agent, Tony Dutt, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The 29-year-old Lewis was an All-Star last season and is one of the NBA's best 3-point shooters at 6-foot-10, allowing him to play on the perimeter and the Magic to create the matchup problems that helped them beat Boston and Cleveland in the postseason. He was hurt late in the regular season, missing the final three games with right knee tendinitis, then returned to average 19.0 points in the playoffs to help lead the Magic to the NBA Finals.

This is why I think the people who run sports are a joke. The game of baseball gets criticized till no end because of people take performance enhancing drugs but look what happens when it happens in other sports. Atleast in baseball the players get suspended for 50 games on their first offense and they are scrutinized non stop. 10 games for Lewis... Are you fucking kidding me? And everyone seems to forget when Shawn Merriman got caught a few years back. What did he get suspended for four games? The he went on to play in the pro bowl and was named all pro that season. IMO baseball has this more under control then any other sport, but it seems that people think roids help in baseball then any other sport. HA HA HA Lews should be suspended for atleast 30 games IMO. Docked 1.6 million of his 18 million dollar salary... wow that really sends a message.

If it wasnt for the congress crackdown, MLB would be the same way.

Here's the difference the MLB isn't that way. It isn't the MLB's fault that congress got involved. Sure there was steroids and Ped's in the MLB before congress got involved and there still is but obviously its like that in every other sport and you dont see congress doing shit to them nor did they ever do shit to the other leagues. There's no question the MLB would have rather had the congress not get involved, but what happened happened. So if an MLB player for a first time offense gets suspended for about one third of the season how about the NBA and NFL follow suit. Lewis losing 10 games is a fucking joke.

Good, this is just another reason why the Wizards are going to win that division next year.

If PEDs were widespread in MLB, there is no way they weren't widespread in NFL.

Out of all the sports, NFL is most influenced by strength, speed, etc. Football and PEDs, perfect match.

It now appears that 70-80% of some MLB rosters were using PEDs at some point. Given that, would it really surprise you if 50% of the Oakland Raiders were using PEDs in 1996?

How NFL has managed to stay under the radar (relatively), I don't know.
