Really, that's all??

You would have given him more? Wow!

Deal basically works out to be $8 million a year for 8 years of solid service (when he turns 38). The last four years will be the team eating a $5.33 million dollar cap hit. You can't expect them to keep Luongo around past 38. He will likely be retired/released by then. I am interested to see the breakdown of the year to year payment.

I have been against these types of deals in the past, but as long as this is the only one the Canucks have, it is manageable. I don't like the idea of eating a big cap hit 8-12 years down the road, but Luongo is a special player

I think if I was a Canuck's fan I'd be more happy if the contract talks broke down and Luongo played this season out with a chip on his shoulder and with something to prove. Then I think he'd be a one motivated individual with more than just cup aspirations to play for.

He has no real incentive to play for anything right now. His lottery ticket has been punched. Seeing a let down in his performance is not difficult to imagine. As it was he didn’t exactly set the world on fire last year, especially in the playoffs.

I bet any Islanders fan can give us all a great testimonial for why a 12 year guaranteed contract is not a smart business move.

Luongo can retire without any cap penalty.

exactly casey, that is the benefit of this type of deal. In the last few years of his contract when Luongo is only making between 1-2 million year (counting 5.33 million against the Canucks cap), if Luongo decides to retire then that wipes his contract off the Canucks cap as far as I have read
