LSU undecided on pitcher tonight.
His options are either start sophomore Anthony Ranaudo three days after he hung up six rock-solid shutout innings against Arkansas or send sophomore Austin Ross to the mound with a chance to lead LSU back to the college baseball mountain top.
Ranaudo is 11-3 this season with a 2.87 ERA and 155 strikeouts. Ross has been the Tigers’ Sunday starter all season and has grappled with tough luck, which is manifested in a 6-7 record.
Ross won LSU’s CWS opener against Virginia in relief. But he has allowed a pair of two-run home runs in three innings of work in Omaha.
“Ranaudo has never pitched on three days rest,” Mainieri said. “I want to see how he feels when he wakes up (today), see how he feels. I’ve been thinking about a lot of little things. I haven’t given it enough thought.”
Following the Tigers’ 14-5 triumph against Arkansas last Friday, Ranaudo’s eyes widened and lit up as he talked about possibly starting tonight.
“Yeah, I’d definitely want the ball in that situation,” he said, referring to LSU holding a 1-0 lead.
LSU scored six of its seven runs with two outs Monday and now has 16 two-out runs in four CWS games (out of 39 runs). LSU’s season-high is 17 strikeouts, which happened twice (Kentucky on March 13, Auburn on April 24.). … Monday’s loss was the Longhorns’ first this season when they led going into the ninth inning. They had been 39-0 in those situations. … Texas was 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position and is hitting .190 (12-for-63) with runners on base in the CWS.
