quick glance at Piniella's October scorecard with the Cubs reveals more than a few flaws.
In Game 1 of the 2007 NLDS he lifted starter Carlos Zambrano after six innings and just 85 pitches. The score was tied and Piniella was looking to save Big Z for a potential Game 4. The Arizona Diamondbacks -- clearly relieved to have Zambrano off the mound -- rallied for two runs in the seventh inning off Carlos Marmol and the Cubs lost 3-1 on their way to being swept out of the first round.
Piniella's decision to worry so far into the future was dissected all offseason.
Fast-forward to Thursday.
Dodgers Game 1 starter Derek Lowe indicated he would be open to pitching a potential Game 4 on three days' rest if needed. Playoff-experienced manager Joe Torre was asked if he would use Lowe, and waved away the question.
''First of all, we don't know if there's going to be a Game 4,'' Torre said before Game 2. ''I'm still superstitious in that regard to name a Game 4 starter before I knew there was going to be one.''
This time, Piniella stuck too long with Game 1 starter Ryan Dempster, who clearly couldn't find the strike zone and was not going to recover. After issuing seven walks, Dempster still was on the mound to yield James Loney's fifth-inning grand slam.
Then there is the case of right fielder Kosuke Fukudome. Piniella benched Fukudome down the stretch after his hitting woes showed no signs of being reversed. Piniella returned Fukudome to his lineup for the NLDS -- putting hot-hitting Mike Fontenot on the bench -- citing his defense as the reason. But he put Fukudome in the No. 2 spot in the lineup in Game 1 and got an ugly 0-fer.
