The Rebels struggled mightily last week in Lawrence, yielding 546 total yards (276 rushing, 270 passing). The Jayhawks picked up a whopping 32 first downs in the contest and didn't punt once. They held the ball for more than 35 minutes and enjoyed a tremendous third quarter in which they scored 23 points in putting the game out of reach. Still, the Rebels made some plays, recording seven TFLs, forced a fumble and came up with an interception. Safety Joe Miklos had a monster game, tallying 13 tackles, including 11 solo efforts. It was a vast improvement from his three-tackle performance in the opener. So far this season, the Rebels have made 11 stops behind the line of scrimmage. UNLV will need to tighten the purse strings across the board, and do so in a hurry. The Badgers are likely to try and establish the run early in this contest, and if they are able to do so, it could be a long afternoon for coach Robinson's squad.
Speaking of the Wisconsin ground game, it was in full effect last week against Akron, as superstar RB Anthony Davis rumbled for 252 yards on 29 carries with three TDs, and his 414 yards rushing this season ranks him second in the nation. Not to be outdone, standout WR Lee Evans had a superb game as well, catching nine balls for 214 yards and two scores. Evans now has 284 yards receiving, ranking him third in the country. Directing the UW offense is QB Jim Sorgi, who completed 14-of-25 pass attempts for 281 yards and two TDs against the Zips. For the season, Sorgi has hit the mark on 57.6 percent of his throws for 496 yards with three TDS against just one INT. Sorgi's 99-yard scoring strike to Evans in the fourth quarter last week was the longest play from scrimmage in school history and tied the Big Ten mark for the longest pass play. Evans is the only receiver in the nation with a 200-yard game to his credit this season, while it marked the first time in UW history that a running back and a receiver each recorded over 200 yards in the same contest. Scoring points hasn't been the Badgers' problem through the first two games as they are putting up 36.0 ppg on typical yardage averages of 266.5 ypg on the ground and 248.0 ypg through the air.
As long as Wisconsin holds onto the ball, they will score every possession. The question is can they stop UNLV. I don't know the best play may be the over. After looking at it some more, I see it now 50-24.
GL to all,
KMAN
