Saw on the news that LSU is in dire financial straights; Could this have an effect on the athletic programs/Football ?
If Les Miles' paychecks started to "bounce" he would really become upset.

They sell out every home game. I find it hard to believe that the football program loses money.

I agree......I doubt if the football program is losing money.....The question would be whether the football program is having to subsidize the University
as a [whole] including, women's sports and all the other non-revenue producing programs that are offer. The headline I saw in the news didn't
go into detail.

I read 2 fairly extensive articles (nbc and huff post) and neither article mentioned sports or athletics , but both articles forcast doom and gloom for many teachers (even tenured professors) one article estimated the shrevport campus could lose 30% of the faculty. ... higher tuition and less pell grants for students.

From a friend at LSU...

This isn't what it seems. It is t from gross mismanagement or anything like that.

The Louisiana constitution only allows the governor and the legislature to cut from 2 sources: higher education and/or healthcare.

Obviously I can't explain this in 1-2 sentences, but the biggest problem is that the government of Louisiana built it fiscal budget on $100 per barrel oil prices. Based on the fact that those barrels are actually selling for $50, there is a gap that needs to be covered.

This begins to illustrate the problem. What is really crazy is that the athletics dept is self sustaining and is setting records with revenu and salaries.

I believe this same issue is being experienced is a number of locations, but this is an extreme instance.

It's my understanding that exigency is a last last last, worst case scenario. In years prior, the state made the a change to a flagship agenda for higher education. Basically they made a bunch of 2 year colleges into 4 year universities.

There are option like returning them to 2 year schools and even eliminating them on the table. In Louisiana there are 4 public systems (LSU, UL, UNO and Southern), 3 additional public universities and 4 private college/universities.

There are tough choices that need to be made. LSU Baton Rouge will get some cuts and maybe even lose some majors or a college, but at the end of it, LSU will be the least affected of all the possible locations for cuts.

Thank you for the your input (919); Louisiana State University (Baton Rouge) is one of the outstanding institutions of higher learning in America; You can certainly obtain anything that a student wishes academically while enrolled there. There is no question that much of the "fat" needs to be trimmed from all these University budgets......Courses like "Same Sex Marriage Studies" and art classes where students need to be in the "nude" in order to pass their final exam (UC-San Diego) is pure horse-sh-t.....Football programs like LSU's and others are self-sustaining financially but, they will become a target....(high coaching salaries and operating budgets etc.).....watch and see. Sports that are non-self-sustaining financially should have to operate within their means.

Title lX...the great savior and facilitator of women's sports became part of the problem resulting in strained athletic budgets. Is there a college women's sports
program that pays for their hard-costs though direct revenue from ticket sales and TV money? My guess is only a handful at the most (basketball). I'm sure there are men's programs that come-up short as well..... I feel these sports should operate within the parameters of their financial means.
Nothing wrong with "bake sales" to raise money to buy team uniforms. Can't we see that happening in today's world ? I must be joking.

IIRC, LSU was one of the 6 or 7 Athletic Departments in the black without accepting state funds or tuition to sustain it. So, not sure blaming title IX is applicable here.

Most sports dont pay for themselves. But for Women's, there are probably a few bball programs and even fewer volleyball programs.

No Doubt it Coach...All these "big-time" football programs and there high-paid coaches (including their assistants) who are sitting in financial
luxury could spell disaster for the game as we know [it]. There has to be a breaking point when the "well" runs dry.
