VCU AT WAKE FOREST</TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#cccccc>
TODAY 7 p.m., Winston-Salem, N.C. ON THE AIR Radio: WBBT (107.3), 6:30 p.m.</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>Shortly after Virginia Commonwealth had survived an overtime thriller with American Monday night at the Siegel Center, Nick George found out the Rams would be playing Wake Forest in the next round of the Preseason National Invitation Tournament.
"This is definitely what we wanted," said George, whose memory bank was recalling a first-round 79-78 loss to the Demon Deacons in the NCAA tournament in March.
"It felt terrible to lose to them last time. Now that we have another shot, we're going at them like we did last time. This time we want a victory."
Be careful what you wish for.

</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>This will be a significantly different matchup than the one that unfolded eight months ago. Wake Forest has every starter returning from last year's squad, which reached the Sweet 16 in the NCAAs. The Deacons are favored to win the Atlantic Coast Conference and go a long way in this season's NCAA Tournament. And they'll be on their home court this time, with around 14,000 in the stands.
"We're a different team," VCU coach Jeff Capel said after the Rams edged American 82-76. "They're kind of the same. They're a lot better. They didn't lose anyone. We lost two really, really good players."
That would be guard Domonic Jones and post man Troy Godwin. Jones scored 22 points and handed out seven assists in the March meeting, while Godwin had six rebounds.
The Rams will also be without swingman Michael Doles for the second straight game. Doles, who averaged 11.2 ppg off the bench last season, was diagnosed with mononucleosis on Monday and is out indefinitely.
VCU got 27 points from guard B.A. Walker and 24 from George in outlasting American. The Rams were 10 of 20 from behind the 3-point arc.
"We've been working hard," George said. "A lot of people continue to say, 'Domonic Jones is gone. Troy Godwin is gone.' I don't think people realize how much of a talented team we are. We're good at what we do. If we stay together and play with heart from the start, we can come up with a victory."
In addition to all-ACC guard Chris Paul, the Deacons are expected to start a frontline of 6-9 Jamaal Levy, 6-9 Vytas Danelius and 6-9 Eric Williams, which will make it difficult for the Rams to score inside. VCU will likely start 6-8 Calvin Roland in the post and bring 6-8 Derrick Reid and 6-9 Renardo Dixon off the bench.
"We're excited to get to play an ACC team, a team that I think is one of the top two teams in the country," Capel said. "I know our guys aren't going to back down. We have a lot of respect for them. We know they're very good. We know their personnel. We're going down there and give it everything we have."
