It will not help OU. Their defense is really bad. OU has a lot of players coming back on the defensive side of the ball. Now is the time to dump Mike Stoops, but brother Bob will not do that. With the number of players coming back in 2015, if OU cannot be ccompetitive next season, Stoops should be fired. 4-5 after a 4-0 start is a disgrase for OU and their fans. The only teams they beat after their loss to TCU was Texas (6-7), and the three teams that failed to qualify for a bowl game (Iowa State, Texas Tech, and Kansas). When your defense gives up 30 or more points in 7 of your 13 games, it is time to find another DC.

GS: We had that pegged early on (the need to replace the OC and the DC). I really didn't think Bob had it in him. Starting to remind me of the recent Texas scenario though. You go 8-5, change a bunch of coaches (or they leave on their own) and eventually the HC goes. Could be a rerun. Obviously Stoops' new home and his family have become his priority and they do not want to relocate. Mike is looking for a new job so that tells us a lot and it took a lot of pull to get Josh out of the picture. I don't know if I would write them off completely as far as next year goes but when you are picked in the top 5 in the preseason and wind up losing 5 games it all there for all to see. OU has been there before but that re-punt against OSU will always be hanging over Bob from this point on. One more boo boo like that and it will get very interesting.

The Big 12 needs OU and Texas to once again carry the banner. Teams like Baylor and TCU are not going to cut it. If the Big 12 has any hope of making the Playoffs with their current set up, they are going to need name teams leading the way, not "who are they?" teams. Baylor really hurt the Big 12 by losing to MSU after having a huge lead. All that did was prove that the Selection Committee got it right.

Stoops press conference was just over and he said he is promoting Montgomery to co-defensive coordinator. I don't really know what to make of that other than it sounds like a potential awkward situation. The good news is OU has some key components coming back on defense next year. But they really need to get a better grasp of the 3-4 defense or else go back to the 4-3 that they are more familiar with. I really wish he had gotten rid of Kish and brought in a 3-4 position specialist that knows what their doing. Despite what Stoops said in his press conference, it still wouldn't surprise me if a couple more coaches are canned before all of this is over. This would be the the time to do it during the dark period of recruiting for the next 2 weeks.

There were high expectations at the QB position going into the season.

Not sure that position played as most anticipated.....

The OC usually gets the blame when that happens.

Good point. The switch to the 3-4 was a total fiasco.

It's not an easy defense to run. Your asking linebackers to be defensive linemen at times, and safeties to be linebackers. You really need the personnel to run it or it doesn't work. That goes for the coaches on down to recruiting the right players for that scheme. I could be wrong, but something tells me Stoops is going to bring some new people in to run it. There was a lot of pressure to get rid of Huepel, so I think Stoops did it now to appease the fans. But after this dark period in recruiting is over and they get their commitments, the heads could start rolling again come late January/Feb. Kish would probably be the first to go. He's pretty useless.

I think a big beefy run stuffing NT is probably one of the keys to running the 3-4 defense. At least that's what they usually say when talking about this scheme in the NFL.

And in OU's case it took their best pass rusher out of the equation most of the time. I see them going to the JC ranks which might actually be just what they need.

Yep, that was by far the biggest blunder of this defensive scheme they did in taking a player like Striker, who was a terror rushing the passer all of last season, and taking him almost completely out of that role. It goes to show you how little this coaching staff knew about the 3-4. None of them had any prior experience in running it, and still don't. They need some position coaches in there that do, and this spring Mike Stoops needs to visit a lot of football camps of teams who run this scheme and to try and get a better grasp of it.

Mike Stoops needs to be put out to pasture or at least attend some anger management classes.

I'm praying to baby Jesus that somebody will accept his application. He supposedly put in for the LSU job, but even those cajuns are probably smart enough not to hire him. I know one thing, Stoops would be bat shit crazy to retain this same defensive coaching staff. I still think heads are going to roll after this recruiting dead period is up.

Stale is putting it mildly. Falling apart at the seams is closer to it. The dust was starting to accumulate and they needed a good house cleaning. Hopefully while Stoops is getting a hang of this firing thingy, he finishes the job by getting rid of some of the defensive paper weights he calls coaches...

I do not understand why OU recruiting is ranked as low as it is. You would think that they should be able to out recruit Texas, especially with their terrible HC and 6-7 finish this season, but Texas is ranked around 8-10 in the nation and OU is ranked around 18.

HOUSTON -- The University of Houston has hired Major Applewhite as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
Houston coach Tom Herman added Applewhite to the staff Thursday.
The 36-year-old former Texas quarterback was out of coaching this past season after seven years as an assistant at his alma mater. He was Texas' co-offensive coordinator in his last four seasons in Austin after serving as assistant head coach in his first three years on the Longhorns' staff.
Applewhite was Alabama's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2007. He also coached at Syracuse and Rice.

I saw today where OU has showed interest in Oregon and Arizona State's coordinators. It's probably going to take close to a million to get either of them to talk. Co-OC Cumbie from TCU I believe has already interviewed.

I still like the OC from East Carolina. Would you leave Oregon to go to OU? Keep in mind that Oregon and Arizona St had good QB's, not sure how they would have done at OU this year.

I would be willing to bet that the Ohio St coaches have been watching the game film from the Wash St/Oregon game. Why? Well Wash St sacked Mariota 7 times. Ohio St ranked #13 in team sacks, Wash St finished #42 which those 7 sacks helped immensely. Sacks change everything and are every bit as big as turnovers and much more predictable.
