I've been wanting to get a new laptop for some time now. Been saving some extra cash here and there thinking I would want something in the $900-$1200 range.
I picked up a couple of extra shifts this week so I should have around $1k in spare cash in a week or so and now I'm starting to look at some computers online.

I found a couple of ones that are actually under the price range I was thinking but that look pretty decent.

The first one is $699.99. I really like the slick design on this one and the massive 320GB HDD is a big plus.

The second one is a hundo more at $799.99 looks slick also but a smaller HDD at 250GB.

Now, besides the HDD size, I really don't know shit about computers to compare any of the other specifications. So can any of you computer savy guys provide some insight into which computer would be a better fit for the kind of stuff I would do on it which inlcude:

-General web browsing

-Writing school papers

-Poker

-Music (A lot of it)

-DVD watching

-A lot of online video watching (youtube, hulu.com, justin.tv etc)

-Not looking for a gaming machine by any means but I may install a not too graphically demanding game once in a while.

By the way, I'm not married to these two choices or anything so feel free to recommend another laptop.

Oh, and what do you guys think of HP laptops in general?

Here is the laptop I have...and I've owned quite a few. This is my best one ever. Convertible tablet PC as well as laptop, lightweight, touchscreen...and so much more. Best deal I've seen out there.

I bought a Sony VAIO about a year ago.

This thing is really nice. Never had a problem with it. Lightening fast on the internet.

I would suggest you get something with at least 1GB of RAM or memory. The new Windows operating system, Vista, is a hog.

Go to Craigslist and buy a used late model of whatever you're looking for.

Before making the transaction, have the seller go online with the unit and access Windows Update.

This will verify the Windows operating system is authentic and not a ripped off clone.

Use the saved money to buy your wife or significant other some jewelry.
