Need to get my fat ass moving and have decided to give bike riding a shot.

Dont know shit about bikes though. Looking to stay under $300.

Whats the difference between Mountain, comfort, and speed?

Any ideas would be helpful.

Trek makes a decent bike for the money. Many price points.

Comfort would be big tires and a big ass seat, maybe only 1 gear.

Mountain the most versatile for road and street.

Speed has very thin tires and usually in that uncomfortable position you see in the races. Strictly for the road.

Time, owned a bike store for 20 years. Get a mountain bike but if you are going to ride mostly on streets and not on the dirt, make sure it has smooth ties(street tires). A mountain bike with smooth tires are sometimes called city bikes.

Not sure of the type of person you are, but it seems that most people that swear that they are going to get into shape with a big expenditure dont end up following through with the workout part of it. I needed to change up my cardio and told myself I was gonna swim, so I swam twice, decided I needed googles, bought a sweet pair of $15 ones, and ended up swimming twice more.

I would recommend getting a membership at a gym for a month and see how consistently you ride the workout bikes there. If after a month or two you are still riding the stationary bike 2-3 times per week, go ahead and make the investment in a real one for more money.

Again I dont know your personality but it just seems like everyone that spends a bunch on bikes or workout equipment never uses it, just trying to make sure you dont waste your money.

Get a couple of dumbbells and a doorway chinning bar. Do some crunches while lying on your couch.

An easy 20-minute routine that you can do once or twice a day, every day, is much better than any cardio work that you won't have the courage to do more than once a month.

Perfect advice. A mountain bike with slicks(street tires) is what you're looking for.
