The betting action on the Indianapolis Colts-Jacksonville Jaguars game at Wembley Stadium in London was more than double that of any other NFL game on the Sunday slate at U.K. sportsbook Ladbrokes.
"Yesterday's game demonstrated again the popularity of holding NFL games at Wembley for the U.K. betting public," Ladbrokes spokesman Alex Donohue told ESPN. "The [betting action] achieved figures approximately 10 times greater than we would expect were the game between these two teams to have been held in the U.S."
Sports betting is legal in the U.K. The NFL, which opposes legal sports betting in the U.S., closed the betting kiosks located at Wembley Stadium, as it has in the past. But it didn't stop many from betting on Sunday's game.
Despite being up against four Premier League games and the final day of the Ryder Cup, the amount bet on Colts-Jaguars rivaled the record amount bet on last year's game between the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets at Wembley Stadium, according to Donohue.
William Hill's U.K. sportsbook reported taking just over £100,000 in bets on Colts-Jaguars.
The NFL will hold two more games this season in the U.K. The New York Giants and Los Angeles Rams will play Oct. 23 at Twickenham Stadium, home of the English rugby team. The following week, Cincinnati and Washington will play at Wembley Stadium.
