I'm sure glad Obama is guarding our liberty. :):)

Feds Freeze Online Poker Accounts

By Radley Balko on Gambling and Poker

The feds may not be able to arrest people for gambling online (technically, it isn't illegal), but it looks like they plan to make life pretty difficult for them. From the Wall Street Journal:

>>> In an apparent crackdown on Internet gambling, federal authorities in New York have frozen or seized bank accounts worth $34 million belonging to 27,000 online poker players, according to representatives for the players and account holders.

In an operation that began last week, the office of the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York froze or issued seizure orders for bank accounts in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Arizona held at Wells Fargo, Citibank, Goldwater Bank and Alliance Bank of Arizona.

A spokeswoman for the U.S. attorney's office had no comment.

The accounts are managed by Allied Systems Inc., and Account Services, which handle cash for popular online poker sites, including Full Tilt Poker, Poker Stars, Ultimate Bet and Absolute Poker. Though the money belongs to the poker players, it is held for them in accounts managed by the two service companies.

Account Services, which had an account worth $15 million frozen in its San Francisco bank, doesn't accept deposits, but writes checks to players who are cashing out, said lawyer for the company, Jeff Ifrah. As a result, thousands of players receiving checks from the company won't be able to cash them, he said.

In the last week, the major poker sites have also shut down some of the main mechanisms for U.S. players to make deposits.

Really $30 million while it stings won't put them in in a bad spot. I'm surprised that any company would still do any banking within the US

Wrong as usual, it was the repugs behind this fiasco. Just like they (Frist and friends) were with NetTeller which caused Pinnacle to abandon the U.S. market. Baby jesus cries when americans gamble online.

I don’t like to report real “NEWS.” But when something big in the industry happens in our own back yard, we have to act
News broke late last night that payments to online poker players in the United States are being frozen by four financial institutions. The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York issued seizure orders on Wells Fargo, Citibank, Goldwater Bank and Alliance Bank of Arizona. Currently, an estimated $33 million dollars is owed to 27,000 players.
I am going to blame the Acting United States Attorney for Southern District of New York, Lev Dassin. This came from him office. But don’t get me wrong The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Chief Judge Kimba M. Wood (appointed by President Regan in 1987) had to say okay. So he sucks too.
Dassin is obviously bitter. President Obama (friend to poker) has nominated a new U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, Preet Bharara. When confirmed, Bharara will replace Dassin in what many call the most high profile in the nation. Bassin is just trying to cause waves and push a Republican agenda before Obama’s people can regulate online poker.
There isn’t even legalized poker in New York, how is this possible that they would get involved?! Regardless, NYC poker players need to start to rally. I suggest a march on The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District!

The irony is that the majority of funds were frozen in California, but the request to freeze them came from the United States attorney for the Southern District of New York, where it is not illegal to place bets. Speculation abounds that this is a last ditch effort by a staunch Republican U.S. Attorney on the way out to make some noise before he’s replaced by President Barack Obama’s new nominee for the job, Preet Bharara. Makes sense, but doesn’t make life easier for those trying to cash out winnings for the WSOP Main Event seats.

Typical libby, can't handle the truth.

The Democrats control the executive branch, both legislative branches, and have appointed their boys and girls to all leadership positions.

Stated differently, they make and / or condone each and every decision. You can't spin that. The justice department is controlled by Obama.

Act like a man.

you should work on critical thinking

you see, not everything you read is true. Especially when the dots don't connect.

seriously chief you need to do a little thinking for yourself.

nah, let "the main event" do it for you on second thought ^^:)

gotta love that, even when the dems run EVERYTHING, they still can't accept responsibility and will still blame 'that bush side' for any moronic decision (which is pretty much anything that comes across the ticker these days)

It's not a right vs left situation. It's all about stealing money.

This is just a warm up for the main event.

Another example of the one-party system. Both parties are bought and paid for by the same special interests, and stealing and looting from the private sector is par for the course. As I said before the election, the only change is obama physically. Nothing else will change due to the fact the man runs absolutely nothing.

now that would be some scary shit, the exact opposite of what I think should happen

if a move like that doesn't wake us up, should it happen, then nothing will.

Never fear...that's an utter delusional scenario posed by the same people who told you that BushCo would take away our rights to type liberal opinions on the internet

LOL

silly me, and I really thought the Democrats controlled the The Presidency, the Senate and the House.

the way things have been being passed down there in DC land, I didn't realize it was all a charade and the GOP was still controlling the agenda.

And I thought I was stating the obvious.

Gosh darn it
