New York City and Los Angeles typically spring to mind when people are asked to name the U.S. cities where residents pay the highest taxes, yet neither even features in the top ten according to latest figures.

Each year the office of the chief financial officer of the District of Columbia produces an annual report comparing taxes in the largest city in each state and their latest findings have thrown up some unexpected results.

When they considered the combined tax burdens - income, property, sales and auto - for five different household income levels for a family of three, the city which came out on top with the biggest tax burden was Bridgeport, Connecticut.

New York City and Los Angeles by comparison came at 11th and 16th respectively.

Across the 51 cities compared, tax burdens varied widely at all income levels.

At the $25,000 income level, the $4,232 burden for Honolulu, Hawaii was found to be more than nine times greater than the $454 burden for Burlington, Vermont.

Worth it? Bridgeport, Connecticut, has topped the list of the most expensive cities in the country based on the amount of taxes people have to pay

Similarly, at the $150,000 income level, the Bridgeport burden of $33,208 is more than five times the Cheyenne burden of $6,307.

The differences in the composition of state and local tax structures can cause a wide variation in tax burdens at all income levels.

After Bridgeport, the highest combined overall tax burden, based on all income levels, occurred in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; followed by Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Baltimore, Maryland.

After Cheyenne, the lowest combined tax burdens was Las Vegas, Nevada; followed by Billings, Montana; and Anchorage, Alaska.

Cheyenne, Wyoming, is the city with the lowest combined tax burden according to research carried out by the District of Columbia

Colombia's CFO could find no single pattern to characterize which cities had either high or low tax burdens.

Generally, however, high tax burden cities had graduated individual income tax rates and/or high real estate tax rates, moderate to high housing values and were located in the Northeast.

Low tax burden cities generally had low individual income tax (if they have one at all) and average or below average real property tax rates.

it's also the poor inner-city that enables democrats the claim that the educated and wealthy vote for them because they win Fairfield County in national elections

Why in the world would anyone pay such a high income tax rate to live in Milwaukee?
That place is a dump

as for it's tax burden, it must be because of the state's sales and excise taxes (they don't have to worry much about income taxes) and because of the state's property taxes on cars. Low income people pay a relatively large amount of taxes to own cars in this state.

if you own a car assessed at 10,000, you pay $ 411 in taxes if you live in Bridgeport. You'll pay half of that amount in wealthy towns.

real estate taxes are not impacted like that, since the real estate values are much lower in Bridgeport than it's wealthy neighbors

and how much is that SUV worth? the vehicle in my example was only 10k, in large part because it's Bridgeport

it's all relative boys, if your income is lower your property tax burden as a % of income is higher (no, the guessers of this world are not expected to have any idea what I'm talking about)

LMAO, Wrong Way even talks about me in a thread about Bridgeport, CT. The witless one is so flustered when he's shown to be the phony he's been exposed as, he has to flail away in random threads. azzkick(&^
