Out in Africa a new policy has been drawn up that aims to protect the children of irresponsible gamblers. Sun International casinos are leading the charge with a threat to enforce a life ban on any adult that leaves their children outside in a car.
Dave Webster, Sun International: 'We have a firm policy - which is part of the standard operating procedures at all the casinos - to ensure that children are taken care of while their parents are gambling.'
As part of the new objectives Sun also plans to pop children in the casino crèche if they are found unsupervised after 10 p.m. When they’re parents finally go in search for them they’ll have to pay for the childminders bill or they’ll also be banned.
Overall the objectives going in place at Sun International casinos are simply to ensure:
-That minors (under the age of 18) may not gamble or be on the gaming floor at any time.
-That their casinos comply with gambling board regulations relating to the supervision of children under 18 years, as well as the use and control of crèche and child care facilities.
-All children under 12 are restricted to areas provided for their specific use and entertainment.
-The early detection of minors left unattended by their parents anywhere on a casino property, but most particularly in areas where gambling takes place, in car parks and vehicles, and in those parts of the casino, such as bars, which are for adults.
Webster insisted that families with young children are still welcome to the Sun casinos, after all there’s plenty to keep the kiddies occupied, however: “One must appreciate that there is only so much that the authorities, and we as a company, can do. Parents are always primarily responsible for seeing to it that their children are appropriately supervised, be it at a casino complex, shopping centre, sports event or any entertainment destination.'@@
