I remember reading a story a few years ago (maybe 5 years ago?) where 2 black guys, one 18 and one 20, got caught burglarizing a home red handed, and even wrote a statement while in police custody saying they chose the house "Cuz we knew asans lived ther and asans has money and expensive things" (there wording and spelling to the best of my knowledge, it stuck out cause the spelling and grammar was so bad), and the prosecutor wanted to charge them with a hate crime, because they specifically targeted a specific race for a crime... but, the hate crime charges never materialized.
