Some common terms we see afloat in the forum. Can we get some explanations as to the meaning of these terms in the sportsbetting industry? Please present some numbers as examples.

PS..We are here to assist the new posters. Just because alot know what is what doesn't mean we can't continue to educate the ones who do not know yet and are new to the industry.

Thanks

What's stupid was your feigned ignorance of the subject.

Volume is the same thing as handle, total amounts of bets taken. Hold is what you keep after the winners are paid. Hold will vary from shop to shop. At square shops like SIA for instance the hold % will be much higher than at CRIS. Generally books who open early and take all comers will not have as high a hold % but will make up for it in volume, or handle. Some books like to take their time opening or taking bets because it gives the numbers time to settle. The earlier you take bets the more exposure you have, generally speaking. Also obviously hold varies from bet to bet. As a rule you keep more on 3 team parlays than you do just straight sides. In the old days we kept about 4-7% on straight stuff and betweeen 10-20% on parlays and teasers.

However
It should be noted that when speaking of -110 both ways the theoretical hold of 4.5% that so many refer to is just that, theoretical.

Never wrote a ticket in my life, but speaking to BMs for years has demonstrated that the 4.5% is more of a myth than a reality. Most of the better books gamble more than than they strive for that elusive 4.5%

I thought I read where 1% should be acceptable. If the books would stop spending our money on side habits and hobbies, then they and we would be MUCH better off, but I know I am talking to the wall.
