Jay-Z and the New Jersey Nets? Mike D'Antoni and the New York Knicks?
Heck, the Cleveland Cavaliers' strongest competition for LeBron James' long-term services could be the deep-pocketed new kid on the block -- Europe.

James

<!-- INLINE HEADSHOT (END) --> A person close to James said Tuesday that the Cavaliers' superstar would strongly consider playing overseas if he was offered a salary of "around $50 million a year." James' current contract expires after the 2009-10 season, and while several NBA teams are working to create salary cap space for his impending free agency, none could offer a contract beginning at even $20 million a year. The Russian team CSKA Moscow and the Greek team Olympiacos, which recently gave Josh Childress a contract approaching $30 million over three years, have already contacted James, according to the person close to him. The person added, however, that no monetary or contractual discussions have taken place. While $50 million a year seems outlandish, it is within the realm of possibility, considering the $250 million contract David Beckham received two years ago to join the MLS, the $33 million Michael Jordan was paid by the Chicago Bulls in 1997-1998, the strength of the euro in comparison to the dollar, and the fact that European clubs are not bound by a salary cap. While several NBA players have left the league this summer for more lucrative contracts in Europe, no stars have done so -- or even considered it. Joel Litvin, the NBA's president of league and basketball operations, said the league is not concerned about this developing trend. "I don't want to say it's much ado about nothing, but we think it's overblown a bit," Litvin said. "It's not something we're losing sleep over. " But losing a player of James's magnitude would be nothing short of a nightmare for the NBA. "For the most part, the league considers the players to be fungible products," an official from the Players Association said. "But LeBron is one of the three or four players the league would definitely hate to lose. If a team lost him or Kobe [Bryant] to Europe, it would lose its mind. It would be devastating." But both Litvin and the Players Association official said they don't foresee anything -- even the loss of a superstar -- leading the NBA to eliminate the salary cap and thereby compete financially with the European teams. "It would be disappointing to lose one of our star players, but I have no concern at all about the best players playing anywhere but in the NBA for a long time to come," Litvin said. "I'd be surprised if one of our top players chose to go to Europe but if it did happen, there are many players who would step up and fill the void." The source close to James said he would only play in Europe for a year or two before returning to the NBA. He said James would view it as an opportunity to popularize the game and himself overseas. He added that James would not consider himself to be playing in the "minor leagues." "Not at all," the person said. "He believes those guys are pros also." The entire scenario falls in line with James's stated goals of becoming a billionaire and "global icon." But the representative from the Players Association will have to see James in a European uniform before he believes it. "First of all, we don't know that there's going to be a $50 million offer," the official said. "And secondly, he wouldn't be able to accomplish over there the things that he wants to do over here, which are to win NBA championships, MVP awards, etc..." But he would be filthy rich and a global icon. Chris Broussard is a senior writer for ESPN The Magazine.

Where's the poster calling out the NHL for losing minor players to Europe now? LeBron leaving would be like Sidney Crosby leaving the NHL, something that will never happen.

Who knows, maybe someday Europe will have most of the major sports leagues and not the US.

I call bullshit on this.

Nice way to drive up market price in NBA.

Most of these big time stars..the KOBE/ LEBRON/ MELO/ WADE

Love the limelight of the U.S.

Not to mention someone like Lebron and his ego ain't going nowhere until he gets an NBA Title.

LeBron could easily pick up MVP and a NBA Title next season though. He has a few years before his contract expires and I'd be shocked if he didn't win an MVP in the next 2 years (should have won it last year) and he will be a contender for the title every year.

Once he has those things why not go to Europe to be one of the richest athletes in the world?

this is way overblown. just because some minor players went overseas, doesnt mean the big time players are going to. think of the nba as USC and the rest of the world being smu. nba has the prestige, more chances to make money off the court, better facilities then these euro leagues. guys like arroyo and navarro who were nobodys here are ok with that because there used to playing in that environment.

i said it before, will say it again, childress will be back in the nba at the end of this season. he's going to see the difference between the teams and the leagues, and be begging to get back. his contract even has opt out clauses, he knows he'll be back next year.

A beer' s fifty cents in AKron Ohio. What's he gonna do? Buy 20 million cases instead of 10 million? The guy makes about 30 million+/year with endorsements in a dirt cheap place to live

honestly, there arnt enough spots in the NBA for alot of these euros who think they are hot shit trying to come over here. guys like navarro, arroyo, delfino, those pansies shouldnt have even been in the league to begin with.

the elite euros are still pandering to get over here. thats why rudy fernandez just signed with the blazers. thats why rubio will be coming over.

It would be hard to turn down $50 mil+ a year. I know I would take it.

There is no team in Europe that can afford paying that much per year for/to a single player.the richest clubs budget in Europe currently is between 40-50 million usd a year for entire team, salaries and everything else around.

Not quite closed.

The Knicks are in cap hell...I don't think they'll be out of it before 2010. And why would LeBron want to play with scrubs and wait around another 3-4 years for his new team to rebuild? Not to mention, the Cavs only have $4 mil on the books for 2010 (after LBJ's current contract expires). Cleveland will have plenty of cap space to re-sign him as well as add another major player to the roster.

I'm very open to a wager on this if you're interested...

What market price can LeBron drive up?

He is going to sign a max contract. There is no such thing as a more-than-max contract.

Euro sports are a bit different than USA. Owners tend to care less about money. It is more about pride, prestige, etc.

Olympiakos has a billionaire ownership group. You think they care about $50-60 million?

Normal people splurge on a Rolex or Mercedes. These rich Europeans are going to splurge on NBA and NHL stars.

Dude, not only are you being hypocritical, but you are terribly wrong. Of the three "Euros" you mentioned, only Navarro is an actual European (Delfino is Argentinian and Arroyo is Puerto Rican).

No superstar NHLer has left and you make a huge deal out of the NHLers leaving, and then you shrug it off when 9 NBA players leave for the NBA. That's ridiculous.
