Iola-based lawyer Bruce Meagher, has been convicted for his participation in an offshore Internet sports betting operation. He received a six-month suspension of his law license by the state Office of Lawyer Regulation (OLR).

Meagher’s six-month suspension was imposed retroactive to November, when Meagher received a temporary suspension of his license.

The suspended lawyer, Meagher, in a stipulated agreement with the OLR, has agreed to the six-month suspension as a sanction for his part in the sports betting operation and for a separate complaint in which he represented two clients which claimed he had competing interests in a business venture.

He was convicted of one count of violating the Federal Wire Wagering Act in April 2002 and sentenced to one month in prison and five months of home confinement, besides a fine of $20,000.@@

Question: Was he given 1 month of jail time for PLACING BETS ON-LINE? (ie wire act?) Or was it more involved than this? What state was this or does it not matter?

Wild Bill stated very recently that no-one had ever been given jail time for "placing" a bet on line.
Before Lou or someone else starts jumping on me for quoting Wild Bill, it's just a QUESTION?

Prison for Iola lawyer" (7/19/02) Appleton Post-Crescent & Stevens Point Journal

An Iola attorney sentenced last week for his role in aiding an illegal Internet sports gambling ring won't necessarily lose his position with the village. Bruce J. Meagher was sentenced to one month in federal prison on a charge of operating an offshore sports gambling book.

He also was ordered by Chief U.S. District Judge Barbara B. Crabb to spend five months on home detention and one year on supervised release. He also must pay a fine of $20,000.

Meagher pleaded guilty to the federal gambling charge on April 23 in the case against Gold Medal Sports, which operated on the island of Curacao in the Netherland Antilles. The operation handled phone and Internet sports-betting activity from U.S.-based customers in excess of $402 million between 1996 and the first quarter of 2000.

Meagher is the sixth defendant to plead guilty and receive a sentence in the investigation into Gold Medal Sports, according to J.B. Van Hollen, U.S. attorney for the western district of Wisconsin. The three-year investigation was conducted by the IRS, the U.S. ****** Inspection Service, the FBI and the Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation.

Moral of the story is don't use your real name in the course of this business and don't try to do anything related to an offshore operation while living in the US. Simple enough.

It is ok for recreactional players to use their name with sportsbook--I am assumming as long as the player reports any income from gambling.

Glad to see the heading changed on this post to more accurately reflect the incidence.

Hell--lawyers don't gamble anyway--they have legalized thievery!
