(AP) WASHINGTON Former first lady Laura Bush on Monday expressed support for President Barack Obama's decision to speak to the nation's school children, saying it is "really important for everyone to respect the president of the United States."
In an interview with CNN, Mrs. Bush, a former school teacher, said, "There's a place for the president of the United States to talk to school children and encourage school children" to stay in school. And she said parents and others also need to send that message

Democrats, then the majority party in Congress, not only denounced Bush's speech -- they also ordered the General Accounting Office to investigate its production and later summoned top Bush administration officials to Capitol Hill for an extensive hearing on the issue. ...
The day after Bush spoke, the Washington Post published a front-page story suggesting the speech was carefully staged for the president's political benefit. "The White House turned a Northwest Washington junior high classroom into a television studio and its students into props," the Post reported. With the Post article in hand, Democrats pounced. "The Department of Education should not be producing paid political advertising for the president, it should be helping us to produce smarter students," said Richard Gephardt, then the House Majority Leader. "And the president should be doing more about education than saying, 'Lights, camera, action.'"
Democrats did not stop with words. Rep. William Ford, then chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee, ordered the General Accounting Office to investigate the cost and legality of Bush's appearance. On October 17, 1991, Ford summoned then-Education Secretary Lamar Alexander and other top Bush administration officials to testify at a hearing devoted to the speech.

The GAO concluded that Bush's speech was "legal," but that didn't stop the National Education Association from denouncing it.

PPP, a Congressional investigation, now that's just too funny. That's elected officials doing their thing, not bloggers.

Laura thinks we should respect the POTUS. Barbanman my friend, not sure you, or anybody here, should try to make that argument.

She's right about the respect thing, but after the way virtually the entire left bashed W and given the fact that the extreme left is guiding Obama, there's not much chance of that happening. The conservative voters and bloggers are just going to climb down into the ditch and join liberal voters and bloggers and even elected democrats in the partisan divide the left manipulates. It's their survival mechanism.

Sorry

I just find it troubling that a former First Lady would give a big okey dokey to allowing our nation's future - the young people - be exposed to the radical Islamic, pro-militant sodomite, welfare food stamp suckin', pussy foreign policy attitudes espoused by President Barack Obama.

We all know the only reason Obama told kids to stay in school and listen to their teachers was so that they could be indoctrinated by teachers who Obama is paying under the table to promote his communist agenda.

I guess conservatives find staying in school and working hard as communist.

That's certainly troubling.

But nowhere near as troubling as the secret payola that the Obama administration is funneling to the producers and broadcasters of Saturday morning cartoon programming.

Can't Verify It Yet, but I heard from a friend of a guy whose brother's boss lives near this lady that used to work with some of the people who were fired and replaced by fresh writers for the Smurfs cartoon series.

Upcoming episodes have Smurfette going to the hospital to abort the baby she's carrying from an unknown Smurf. And the hospital can't do the abortion because health care reform is hung up in Washington DC.

I don't want to post a Spoiler here, but I think a lot of our nation's kids are going to be upset if Smurfette dies from a back alley abortion just because the Republicans are obstructing sensible reform.
