that is a great question
I think really it is just the enormity of it all. I posted an article about it yesterday, and the thinking is that the NFL benefits in many ways by ruling in favor of TO.
Keyshawn wasnt a larger than life player at the time. Maybe when he was with the Jets, but not when with Tampa. T.O. fits the mold of that larger than life player, and by letting TO go they avoid a lot of heat and quickly sweep the issue under the rug and the leauge stands to make a little more with him on the field instead of doing situps on his drive way.
Thanks Rob, I went back and found your article, by Skip Bayless. The difference between Keyshawn Johnson and TO is that Tampa put KJ on inactive status with full pay; TO is suspended without pay for 4 games. If the Eagles had done the same thing to TO as Tampa did to KJ, ie. put him on inactive status with full pay for the remainder of the season, this case probably would not even have gone to arbitration.
It was reported today that the arbitrator has asked the 2 sides to reach a settlement before he decides the case. They may or they may not....the Eagles have shown that they will cut off their nose to spite their face in this situation. But just about everyone with any insight into this case agrees that the Eagles will not totally have their way with this case. They won't get the full 4 game suspension, they may get 2; they won't get the whole signing bonus (somewhere around $1.75 million) back, they may get a portion back; and they may have to outright release TO this year.
