With the location they have, something will always be there. Although the old time atmosphere was appreciated by many (including myself), a major renovation may be necessary to bring more modern day gamblers in.

I can't believe they won't eventually restore that location.

Not too many old time landmarks left.

The only time I ever dined there was in 2003 with a party of sixteen. The waitress "inadvertently" added a $ 100 bottle of wine to our tab.

Never saw something like that before. Don't know if it happens often or not, or if this was just an isolated occurrence. Maybe the waitress was acting on her own, and would correct the tab later and keep the money, IDK.

I never ate at the Steakhouse one time, when I wasn't comped.

I believe the steakhouse and main cafes will remain open. The steakhouse is scheduled to be temporarily closed for a yearly cleaning, but it's supposed to come back. All of that from the latest LVRJ story I read.

The snack bar -- which was once a great place to grab a bowl of chili -- will no longer be around, though.

the rj published this, exactly what i was told sat., this morning.
the snack bar, once a dirty pit, which was cleaned once a year whether it needed it or not has been expanded and remodeled, and seemed to be doing big business.

cafe = coffee shop downstairs, used to have the steak special after 10pm.

Jack was the best in that whole family....true gentleman:toast:
Teddy was a great guy when he was off the drugs and probably more like Benny than Jack was, the entire family was messed up except Jack and Brenda.

Rooms there were pretty nice for the price, stayed there in August. I can see closing it down instead of renting them out at $20, your guests will leak out of your hotel downtown, and gamble wherever they want downtown, since there are about 10-12 hotels all really close together there.

The 350 ish rooms there are a drop in the bucket, compared to GN. I could see Goldengate doing the same, even LV club.

$20 rooms might work if you can trap the guests to staying there, and playing there. Otherwise your just a hotel losing money with too cheap rates.

Vegas is dead.

My wife and I spent a lot of time at Binion's while attending the bash this summer and I thought maybe the place had turned the corner. Crowds seemed very good, service was fast and friendly, the place seemed like it had been spruced up a little bit.

I'm suprised they are cutting back, hope they make it in the end. This has always been one of my favorite places, going back to the late 70's to early 80's.

I couldn't even go in the place when Becky was running it. Made me sick to see how stupid those people were.

Steak House was the best....many a settleup figure was transacted up there...:toast:

I read Positively Fifth Street awhile back. It's about James Mcmanus, who was sent by Harper's magazine to cover the WSOP in 2000. The guy ended up playing in the WSOP and acutally made it to the final table that year.

He talks quite a bit about the Binion family and the steak house you mention.

Deli was great. Steak house had a fantastic view.
Many people over the years jumped off the parking garage to commit suicide. Was in the sports book once when a guy jumped. Landed right by Valet parking.

the talk is the Union Plaza is closing real soon. they just had a lay off and are going to transfer the rest of the employees to the Vegas Club.

Sad, to see Downtown die a slow death. i have so many memories of the downtown Joints.

It's a shame that's the part that's closing. I still liked going and getting a cheap steak at the downstairs part. The snack bar I haven't liked since they remodeled it.

I also hate to hear the rumors about the Plaza. That's my favorite place to watch sports downtown, even including the Nugget.

Las Vegas will lose a lot of downtown dies. I don't care much for the Strip. They spend all that money on the themed mega-hotels and still they don't have any character.
