Over 300 visitors to the California and Main Street Station have become sick since December.

Who wants to go there anyway?

Some more Vegas tidbits

My story last week about the rumored production of the musical "We Will Rock You" generated a surprising response -- from no less than Brian May of the famed band Queen.

May co-created the musical, which is based on the music of the British group whose hits include "Bohemian Rhapsody," "Another One Bites the Dust," and "We Will Rock You."

I said that I wasn't sure if the show would work, since its music isn't bubbly like "Mamma Mia!" which is based on ABBA songs. I said that I had the same worries about a production of "Phantom of the Opera," and mentioned "Notre Dame du Paris," the smash hit French musical that flopped in Las Vegas.

A couple of days after the story was published, I received this e-mail from Brian May himself:
Dear Mr. G

Brace yourself Rick -- if you think We Will Rock You is ANYTHING like "Mamma Mia!" or "Phantom," far less "Notre Dame" (!) , you're in for a wonderful shock!!!

Our show has packed London's huge Dominion Theatre (2,100 seats) for two solid years already -- that's a nearly million and half happy kids of all ages from 8 to 88, and there has NEVER been a night without a massive standing ovation at the end. (Plenty of Americans in there, too!)

And don't forget you're looking at ROCK music here, and from a band who toured the USA constantly through the '70s and '80s -- and topped the charts many times along the way. We do not forget, and nor have, I believe, those kids who still rock to "Champions," "Rock You," "Bohemian Rhapsody," "Another One Bites the Dust," "Crazy Little Thing" ... need I say more????

It's no idle promise, folks of beautiful Las Vegas -- We WILL rock you !!!

See my Web site -- www.BrianMay.com -- for details of auditions starting this coming week.

Cheers, Brian May
QUEEN
Feb. 17, 2004"

As someone who has original vinyl 45s of "Another One Bites the Dust" and "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" -- purchased at a K-mart in Iowa in the early 1980s -- it's a true honor to hear from May. Although being skeptical is part of my job I'm more than happy to reserve judgment until the finished product is up and running on the Vegas stage; I look forward to seeing it!

For the record, "We Will Rock You" is based on the music of Queen and features 25 of the band's hits wrapped up in a story about a group of futuristic rebels who try to rescue music itself from a world where soulless robots write and perform the songs and all instruments are banned. As May indicates in his e-mail, the show has been playing to packed houses in London for more than a year, and new productions have been mounted in Melbourne, Australia, and Madrid, Spain.

While the Vegas production is still not official in terms of a big press release, the fact that they are having auditions for the band seems to indicate it's pretty much a done deal.

Palms patron files suit over security incident

A local lawsuit against the Maloof brothers and the Palms hotel-casino went national when it was featured Feb. 24 on the TV magazine show "Inside Edition."

"If you visit a Las Vegas casino, you expect there to be a lot of security guards around," the show's intro said. "After all, there's a lot of money on those tables. But did you know those guards can legally restrain you and keep you in custody for hours?"

One of the cases featured involved Palms staff and patron Kevin Noble, who filed a civil suit in Clark County District Court Oct. 9. A good part of Noble's case hinges on a video of what he called an unprovoked attack by guards on Aug. 9. He was held at the Palms until a Metro Police officer arrived.

Noble was gambling at the Palms when he, his father and a handful of friends left the gaming tables because of a rude boxman, Noble said.

"We went to the cashier's cage, and my dad and a friend cashed in their chips," he said during a telephone interview. "We were approached by two security guards. They were aggressive and in my face, an inch away. My dad came over and said, 'We're outta here.' The guy called my dad an asshole."

What happened next "is jaw-dropping," Noble said.

"My dad told them, 'Leave us alone. We're leaving.' We weren't even asked to leave the casino. We left voluntarily."

As they headed outside, Noble said he felt a bump from behind. Without turning around, he raised his hand and flipped off whoever had pushed him, he said.

"The next thing I knew my sleeve was torn off as someone was pulling me to the ground," he said. "All I felt was someone grabbing the back of my head and someone else grabbing my feet. They were trying to pound my head into the pavement. I could feel someone big on my back with his knee. It came out of left field."

The guards cuffed Noble and called Metro. After an officer arrived, Noble was cited. "The police officer told me, 'Sometimes [security guards] get like that.' I thanked the officer and he shook my hand. He let me go."

The district attorney's office dropped all charges against Noble.

"The videotape says it all," Noble said.

I am sure the dealers at break-in joints like the Golden Gate make far less than 24k. Most people there are playing $10 or less a hand and the dealers are so slow while they are learning that they deal out probably half as many hands an hour as they do at many places.

The only way Bill would have any idea about this is because he frequents the Golden Gate on a weekly basis just to have one of their 99 cent Shrimp Cocktails.

Personally, I find them disgusting, but Bill usually has 2 or 3 of them.

He is right about the dealers however.

I personally would tell anybody wanting to learn how to deal blackjack to purchase some simple addition flash cards.

They can be found at most any childrens learning center.

I have found the 3-4-9-6 combination of cards gives most new dealers the most problems.

I had that 2-1 bj coupon a few years ago over at GG and talked the floor person into letting me play 3 hands at the max for the coupon $25 each. I Scouted and locked up a table to myself for an hour and couldn't find a dealer to deal fast enough. Plus they didn't know what they were doing. No way they are making 24k. Still made a few bucks and found my way over to the shrimp bar. The $2.99 shrimp cocktail were very good.

I broke in dealing at the El Cortez in early 80's - dealers there made around 16,000/yr. Later was a pitboss at the Western, dealers made around 14,000/yr. Can you imagine dealing at that place for that money?
Fish & Krack - I played the 2/1 GG coupon last year - played 3 hands for about 1/2 hr before a new boss came on and freaked.

Heys guys!

I agree completely about the cocktail waitresses making great money.

I have been told that some (at the top places) make a ton... Not to mention the part time, tax free income.

You know.... They don't even have people handing out fliers on the strip. They just "prospect" for their own "clients" as they serve the customers and get to know their personalities and ways they spend money with money.

As for dealers... No doubt a large number of them are addicted gamblers themselves and really need to get out of town in the worst way!

I have had no less than 3 girlfriends(at different times
icon_smile.gif
) in Vegas that were cocktail waitresses, so am pretty up on what they make.

Alot depends on what casino you are working, and also what shift.

But there are quite a few gals that pull down 100,000+ doing nothing more than serving drinks and being friendly.

I know they are on their feet all shift and all..

But... $40 to 75 K is a ton for smiling and serving drinks. You can buy some pretty nice "hoots" on that income.

Oh... I guess most already have!

The "hoots" are a great financial investment for them for sure!!

Another reason I am not to keen on Vegas women as a whole.......very plastic.
