</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>Larry Johnson is averaging a putrid 2.43 yards per carry, but Haley blames the offensive line. "The kid ran hard," Haley said. "He stuck it in there. He needs a little help, too." Backup Jamaal Charles has just 15 carries in five games while L.J. has gotten the call 93 times. It doesn't sound like a change is coming anytime soon, as unbelievable as that is.

</TD></TR><TR><TD vAlign=top colSpan=3>Speaking at his weekly press conference Tuesday, coach Todd Haley suggested that RB Jamaal Charles has earned a larger role going forward.
Haley said that Charles is "starting to get it" and that the second-year back is "growing on him." With Larry Johnson's Kansas City future up in the air, Charles is poised to handle lead-back duties after the bye in Week 9. While Charles' upside is limited in the Chiefs' struggling offense, he's worthy of a high waiver selection this week.

</TD></TR><TR><TD vAlign=top colSpan=3>The Chiefs have ordered Larry Johnson to refrain from team activities until their investigation of his Twitter conduct is concluded.
The Chiefs will hold a news conference Tuesday afternoon to address the comments made by Johnson on Twitter Sunday night. LJ has released a statement through his agent, apologizing to Todd Haley, the Chiefs, and the NFL. It rings hollow, however, when he says his intent was not to offend anyone even though he used a gay slur and belittled his head coach. He's essentially been suspended even if the Chiefs aren't using that word.

</TD></TR><TR><TD vAlign=top colSpan=3>According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Larry Johnson will miss at least one game after the Chiefs barred him from their facility and all team matters.
Kansas City is on a bye currently, but Johnson will miss Week 9 against Jacksonville, which will likely give Jamaal Charles a start. Dantrell Savage and Kolby Smith, assuming he's activated from PUP, are backup options. Charles has suddenly gained the most fantasy value among all of Todd Haley's running backs and needs to be owned in all formats. His rise to the starting job may also result in a more pass-heavy offense.

Jamaal Charles - RB - Chiefs According to the Chiefs' website, Jamaal Charles "appears to be in line to start" in Week 9 against Jacksonville.
This was expected, but noteworthy because the website is drawing conclusions after watching Monday's post-bye week practice. Charles likely got first-team reps. Kolby Smith should be activated from PUP and combine with Dantrell Savage to back up Charles with Larry Johnson suspended. November 2

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>Charles rotated with Kolby Smith and Dantrell Savage against the Jaguars in Week 9 and ended up with just nine touches. The Chiefs made it clear they don't see Charles as an every-down back, but he should split the workload pretty evenly with Smith. Expect Charles to play on passing downs and Smith to get most of the red zone work. Charles should be owned in all leagues and will be a flex option in PPR leagues.

</TD></TR><TR><TD vAlign=top colSpan=3>Chiefs coach Todd Haley refused to commit to a starting running back for Week 10 in his Friday press conference.
"Either (Dantrell) Savage, (Kolby) Smith, or (Jamaal) Charles," Haley said. "Depends what play we decide to open with probably." Haley did guard that by saying Smith still isn't fully recovered from offseason knee surgery, but the Chiefs clearly plan to keep their three-headed RB "monster" intact. Despite a favorable matchup with Oakland, no back here is a strong fantasy bet.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=bodyCopy>According to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, Larry Johnson should get "eight carries or so" Sunday at Oakland.</TD></TR><TR><TD>

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>Mortensen says L.J.'s touch total will be dictated by the "flow of the game," however, so even eight carries may be an overestimation. L.J. hardly knows the offense after signing with the Bengals a week ago. He'll get some work in if the Bengals jump out to an early lead, but Johnson isn't a fantasy option.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>The secretive Chiefs may play the situation close to the vest by listing him as "limited/questionable" on the injury report, but Charles is on track to start against the Bills' lowly run defense. Charles has scored five all-purpose touchdowns in his last four games, and is bordering on RB1 status.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>"He's showing signs that he has a chance to be a real good back in this league," said Haley. "It's a big job, and he takes a beating, so we've got to keep track and try not to overdo it, as hard as it is." Fortunately, Haley had no use for his best offensive player earlier in the season, so Charles' legs are fresh during the fantasy playoffs.
