Larry the cat
Larry was appointed to the post of Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office nearly two years ago, after being adopted from the mean streets of south London via Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.

Larry (left) and Freya, the Chancellor George Osborne's moggy, had to be separated by police after they had a full-scale cat fight outside No 10. Asked about the apparently frosty relationship between Larry and Freya, a No 10 spokesman said: 'They co-exist.'

Larry is the latest in a long line of official mousers at Downing Street, including stalwart ratter Humphrey, who served under Margaret Thatcher and John Major but was retired in 1997, shortly after Tony Blair's arrival. Humphrey was succeeded for a short period in 2007 by Sybil, the pet of then chancellor Alistair Darling, but the renowned mouser failed to settle and returned to Scotland.

[h=1]A win for Remain! Larry the cat to stay on in Downing Street after David Cameron hands over to Theresa May as Prime Minister[/h]
  • Position of so-called 'chief mouser' not under threat from change at the top
  • Larry first came to Number 10 in 2011 from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home
  • Clashed with Osbornes' cat Freya, who has since been banished to Kent

Larry the cat is to stay on in Downing Street after David Cameron hands over to Theresa May.
The so-called 'chief mouser' - a brown and white tabby entrusted with the rat-catching portfolio - will continue his work when the new Prime Minister takes over tomorrow.
A Cabinet Office spokeswoman said: 'It's a civil servants' cat and does not belong to the Camerons - he will be staying.'

Big question: With David Cameron leaving and Theresa May taking over a few hours later, will Larry the cat run the country?
