Laptop sound problems, need help, maybe TTinco ?

I lost my sound a few days ago. Icon on bottom right is on.

I am getting sound on this video $tinky just posted:

but not on anything Youtube.

What is up with that ?

the logical answer seems to be that you have sound off within the youtube website somehow?

it doesn't seem to work on other videos either, so I was surprised it worked on $tinky's video.

There is a button between the keyboard and screen with a speaker symbol, this has been red for months, won't respond to touch turning it back to blue, but the onscreen icon has been a workaround of that.

Computer makes sound when turned on.

You may have something flaking out with your sound card driver(software), or it may be a conflicting setting somewhere.

Go into control panel & make sure that volume control setting is turned up, and then check it in each app/site that isn't giving you any sound.

If its a DELL with Vista there is a new update for the soundcard on the dell site that repairs no sound problems....

I've seen people get burned by this(in odd ways that don't necessarily make sense)....you really have at least 3 volume controls

1. In Control Panel
2. In systray (the bottom right corner of your screen)
3. In the application or page itself

In theory, #1 & 2 are the same-but it doesn't always work that way. I'd check all three of those before considering doing anything drastic.

I'll run it by my neighbor ( Rob) 1st ( he went to the Pats game), I have another friend ( brilliant guy) I can try, if I fail in my attempts ( likely will). I'm not a computer ace.
