I've been doing a little reading up on Lane Kiffin and the Vols and there were a few things in the following article that I found entertaining. You gotta like his competitive spirit and his personality. They show through in this little piece about him.

It's mentioned that Tenn WILL have a similar offense to USC's -- it's a pro-set type. Aside from that, he's already beginning to make some enemies in that conference, something any HC needs to do to survive, especially in the recruiting wars.

Enjoy

Kiffin not treading lightly at Tennessee

Say this for new Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin: He doesn't mind stepping on toes, which just might be a prerequisite if you're going to have any prayer of surviving in the SEC recruiting wars.
Already, Kiffin has drawn the ire -- in some way, shape or form -- of South Carolina's Steve Spurrier, Florida's Urban Meyer and Alabama's Nick Saban.
Some pretty big names, huh?
Among them, they have four national championships and 10 SEC championships to their credit.
<table width="288" align="right" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="4"> <tbody><tr> <td> </td> <td>
nfl_a_kiffin_288.jpg
</td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> <td align="left">AP Photo/Wade Payne</td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> <td align="left">Lane Kiffin has hit the ground running since taking over at Tennessee.</td> </tr> </tbody></table> They're also three of the guys Kiffin needs to beat on the recruiting trail (along with Georgia's Mark Richt) if he's going to return the Vols to elite status in a league that's football's version of a steel-cage match when it comes to wooing the best high school prospects.
In other words, there's no such thing as playing nice, which Kiffin says is the biggest difference between recruiting in the SEC and recruiting in the Pac-10.
"My biggest shock has been the things other coaches say," said Kiffin, who has reunited with his old pal at Southern California and one of the most renowned recruiters in the country, Ed Orgeron, to give the Vols a brand new look.
"You go in behind some of these coaches and hear the things that a coach has said about you, and it blows me away. I would think that you're confident enough to sell your product instead of worrying about us so much. It's surprising, especially since we haven't been here very long. We didn't win very many games last year. I wouldn't think people were very worried about us, but it sure seems like they are."
<!--more--> His critics insist the 33-year-old Kiffin is way too brash for a guy who hasn't proven anything as a head coach and that he has no idea what he's about to get himself into in the SEC.
His supporters insist that he has exactly the kind of bravado and moxie that it takes to go head-to-head against the who's who lineup of head coaches in the SEC.
Either way, it's obvious that a new sheriff is in town in Knoxville, Tenn.
"No question, there's a buzz out there," said Orgeron, who will serve as Tennessee's recruiting coordinator and also coach the defensive line.
It's a buzz that started on Dec. 1 when Kiffin was introduced as the Vols' new head coach, replacing 17-year veteran Phillip Fulmer, who was forced out.
While talking about how eager he was to embrace the Tennessee traditions, Kiffin said one of the things he most looked forward to was "singing 'Rocky Top' all night long" after beating Florida next season.
A little bulletin board material, though, quickly became much more when a perturbed Meyer let it be known several weeks later that Kiffin had better cool it on any inquiries to Florida receivers coach Billy Gonzales with the Gators preparing for the FedEx BCS National Championship Game.
It was also about that time that Spurrier and Kiffin traded a few barbs.
The Gamecocks accused David Reaves of going after players committed to South Carolina and trying to sway them to Tennessee while using a South Carolina-issued phone. Reaves, Kiffin's brother-in-law, was the recruiting coordinator at South Carolina before joining Kiffin at Tennessee and denied those charges.
Spurrier also wondered aloud if Kiffin had even passed his recruiting certification test and was allowed under NCAA rules to be calling recruits. Kiffin responded by guaranteeing that he scored higher on his test than Spurrier.
Things only heated up once January hit.
Kiffin first made a play for Georgia's top recruiter, Rodney Garner, and offered him $400,000 to join the Tennessee staff. Garner elected to stay at Georgia.
And then last week, Kiffin went after Alabama's top recruiter, Lance Thompson, and didn't come away empty-handed this time. Two weeks before National Signing Day, Thompson jumped ship to Tennessee for a big raise, prompting Saban to do two things.
First, he hired James Willis away from Auburn in Kiffin-esque fashion to replace Thompson, and then reportedly told a couple of prospects committed to the Crimson Tide that he didn't want them visiting Tennessee.

"There's so much information out there. But I will say this: The tougher it gets, the more we like it," said Orgeron, well-versed in the SEC recruiting wars after spending three seasons as Ole Miss' head coach from 2005-07.
"That's why we're here. That's the reason I came out of pro ball. In pro ball, you have one first-round pick. At Tennessee, we can get perhaps six or seven."
Orgeron, who lives, sleeps and breathes recruiting, is Kiffin's most important recruiting catch to this point.
After spending last season on the New Orleans Saints' staff, Orgeron was being courted by both LSU and Tennessee. Several of Orgeron's close friends in Louisiana were convinced that he was going to wind up at LSU.
Kiffin, though, wasn't about to take no for an answer. He'd already scored his father, Monte Kiffin, from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for $1.5 million to run his defense at Tennessee. The other centerpiece of his staff was Orgeron, whom the younger Kiffin says was an even more important piece to the puzzle than his dad.
"If it was the NFL, I wouldn't say that," Kiffin said. "I'm saying that because of the recruiting side of things. I can be somewhere else, and I know what's going on in the recruiting meeting that Ed's leading. I can be on the other side of the country recruiting, and I know what's going to go on when he's down in Florida recruiting or wherever he is.
"He's the only guy in America at all that I have that kind of confidence in. Nobody else I've ever worked with knows exactly what I want like Ed does."
The Kiffins solidified the deal with Orgeron during an impromptu trip last month to Destin, Fla., where Orgeron was vacationing with his family.
Lane knew it was close between LSU and Tennessee and had been working Orgeron's wife, Kelly. He told her that he and his dad were coming to see Orgeron face-to-face, but asked her not to tell Orgeron.
When they arrived that day at the condo, Orgeron was standing out on the balcony of the top floor and saw the Kiffins before they saw him.
He started bellowing in his deep baritone twang, "I knew ya'll were coming. I could feel it. I just knew."
The Kiffins got on the elevator and were greeted at the door by a smirking Orgeron.
"We had this whole plan to sell him on and why he needed to come to Tennessee," Lane recounted. "But he meets us at the door and says, 'Before ya'll start, I don't care what you're here to say ... I'm coming.'"
Orgeron will earn a cool $650,000 at Tennessee. The nine on-the-field assistants will be paid a total of $3,625,000 this year -- more than any other staff in college football.
But it's also a staff that Lane Kiffin says unabashedly can offer recruits something that no other staff in America can match.
"You're getting Tampa's defense, and instead of waiting until you get to the NFL, you're going to get coached just like the best players in the NFL," he said. "And the offense is the same offense we ran when I was at Southern Cal, an offense that's been dynamic and has put a bunch of players in the NFL and gotten a number of players drafted higher than they would have been if they had gone somewhere else.
"We're going to put you in a position from a football standpoint that when you're done playing in three or four years that you'll be better prepared than you will if you had gone anywhere else in the country, and I'll argue that with anybody."
Sit back and enjoy, because one way or the other, this ought to be fun.

I kind of like swagger from the new kid on the block. A lot of them start off that way and as they become more familiar with everything they simmer down. Why wouldn't he try to recruit someone who just has a verbal committment to any school much less someone in his conference.
As a coach he has something to prove and if the players or recruits don't get it yet then the alumni and fans surely do. The assistants he has assembled are any recruits dream if the aspire to play on Sunday and the players that are there are going to be born again. All is fair in love and war and other schools are going to question his college credentials and prop up their own. I think this is just what the SE conference needs and if Spurrier and Meyer had their feathers ruffled than that is just too bad.
Thanks for putting this on a thread. I love this kind of stuff. Keep it coming.

I agree it's good to have "swagger". He's assembled a good staff, he has the facilities and money to win at UT. It's likely one of the top 10 programs in the country (considering facilities, fan support, money/boosters, etc). It's going to be interesting to see how they do.......

thats that article from front of ESPN.com yesterday, he was also on front on rivals and scout.com within past 2-3 days...Lane is seriously doing everything right so far.

its been amazing to watch, 3 months ago virtually none of the top uncommited players had TN listed, now they pretty much all do. its really incredible how quickly he has turned around the way the media, fans, recruits, players view the program.

now he just ,um, has to win on the field

I think the rest of the conference will be taking pot shots at UT for a year or 2. There will be a few surprises and maybe even a couple big upsets, but until he packs the roster with his own guys it will be an uphill climb. I give him 3 years and UT will be back in contention. In the meantime they will make steady improvement.

He reminds me a little of Jim Harbaugh out west. (By the way, Stanford may end up #2 in the Pac behind USC in recruiting this season. This will be Harbaugh's 3rd year.)

Tennessee’s Kiffin pissing off fellow SEC coaches
Posted by Anthony Stalter (01/28/2009 @ 11:31 am)
Lane Kiffin hasn’t even held the Tennessee head-coaching job for three months and already he’s managed to tick off fellow SEC coaches Urban Meyer (Florida), Nick Saban (Alabama), Steve Spurrier (South Carolina) and Mark Richt (Georgia).
That kind of preaching-to-the-choir comment fit perfectly into the rhetoric of his first press conference. I doubt it got much of a rise in Gainesville, since the Gators have owned the Vols in recent seasons.
What really irked Florida Coach Urban Meyer was that Kiffin continued to attempt to hire — unsuccessfully, as it turned out — receivers coach Billy Gonzales while the Gators were preparing for the national championship game.
More recently, Kiffin has gotten on the nerves of Alabama Coach Nick Saban to the extent that Saban is asking players who already have committed to the Crimson Tide not to take official visits to UT.
This is in response to Kiffin’s hiring of Lance Thompson off Saban’s staff. Thompson, considered Alabama’s best recruiter, got a big raise to jump to the Vols just two weeks before signing day.
Considering that UT is a combined 1-6 since Meyer and Saban arrived at Florida and Alabama, you have to take your victories wherever you can find them.
And don’t forget that Kiffin also has tugged on Steve Spurrier’s visor. First Kiffin hired his brother-in-law, David Reaves, off the South Carolina staff. Then Kiffin and Spurrier exchanged comments in the press about recruiting.
While we’re at it, Kiffin also threw a $400,000 offer at super recruiter Rodney Garner in an attempt to lure him off Mark Richt’s staff at Georgia. Garner chose to stay at Georgia.
For those keeping score, Kiffin has kicked sand at Meyer, Saban, Spurrier and Richt. It’s no coincidence that those are the coaches of the four most important opponents on UT’s schedule every year. Those are also four programs that the Vols must match in recruiting if they are to regain relevance in the SEC.
Obviously this is all part of Kiffin’s plan to breathe a little life into a Tennessee program that could use a shot in the arm. Is he going about it the right way? Probably not, although that won’t matter if he wins.
If pissing off your fellow conference coaches motivates the program and players, then go for it. But if nothing changes and the Vols get flattened by all of these teams next year, then Kiffin is just going to look like a pompous ass who got what was coming to him.

CP,

I don't think anyone expects Kiffin to roll over anybody next year. His mentor, Pete Carroll, went 6-5 or something his first year at USC. Kiffin just needs to lay the groundwork, get a good recruiting class, make it HIS programs, and get the full buy-in. Look at Tressell, Stoops, and Meyer. They all won an NC in their second seasons. They got the buy in....and they all had middle of the road first years. So, if he can get through this year by establishing himself and making it HIS program he could be on the road to success at UT....or he could fall flat on his face!!! :D

I was reading up on Kiffin yesterday. The article was about who he has already pissed off among the other SEC coaches. The list included Meyer, Saban, Richt and Spurrier. All 4 have made comments about Kiffin. He's already gotten under their skin. Their biggest complaint about him was how he unabashedly went after their AC's, especially their best recruiters and he got away with it. I think it was Saban who told his new recruits with soft verbal committments not to go visit Tennessee. That's highly unusual for another coach to say that and then it goes public.

This sort of thing reminds me of how Harbaugh went after Pete Carroll at the first Pac-10 press day right after Harbaugh was hired. The 2 of them have not gotten along ever since. PC wouldn't even shake Harbaugh's hand after they played last year. Of course everyone remembers Stanford beating USC in LA in '07 at the coliseum. Then they went on to beat Cal in their anual rivalry game the same season.

But the one thing that stands out most to me about Harbaugh's style was the way he has transformed Stanford's losing mindset or culture into believing they could beat anyone. They play with attitude now and I don't know how much better they may be this coming year or the next because Harbaugh's recruiting has blown a lot of minds. (2nd to USC this year.)

I expect the same from Kiffin at UT. He's going to be a pain in the ass to a lot of other HC's in the SEC and that's already started to happen after only a matter of days into his new job.

Pro style is a play not to lose style. Tenn doesnt have good enough athletes to do that. Not to mention he doesnt really know any other offenses.

A bunch of Bs the pro style put USC players in the nfl. Utah beat the piss out of Alabama why? becuase they had SoCal athletes.

really not sure what you are saying? i read it three times i still didnt understand you.

but ill say this. TN has been running a pro style offense for 25 yrs....and the Vols have more put more players in the NFL during that time than USC has.

oh - and the vols have a 5 star cb signing from lake charles , LA today...and im sure as someone who watches little boys play Little League baseball you know what kind of athletes they have there

now run fetch me a pro-am volleyball prop!

Tennessee has been running a pro-style offense sense I have watched them. Tennessee ALWAYS has enough athletes to do what they want to do, but had no discipline. Athletes have never been the problem at Tennessee. It's been coaching for the last three years that has stopped them from getting over mid season humps.

I like this recruiting class and the coaching staff is doing some incredible tings here at Tennessee. The student body is more excited then I have seen it and the New Era - Lane Kiffin shirts are coming everywhere.

But, anyways, much like the basketball team athletes are not the problem.

Oh yeah, isn't it wonderful that Lane named his kid Knox Kiffin. Flawless.

I think you are referring to Janzen Jackson from Lack Charles but I'm not too sure where you would be grabbing the information as far as him coming to Tennessee. Kiffin openly said he had one up his sleve still yet to sign. You think this guy is the one?

I hope Bryce Brown sees some orange and comes to Tennessee as well. Is that considered an extreme long shot?

What is the RB depth like? Last I heard he was going to trip Auburn and USC. His last quote on the leaders for his services: "Oregon leads but I remain committed to Miami" WTH???

Check out the article in the NYT about Browns mentor. Shady dude

yeah some wierd shit goin on with this guy. he also said he wanted to wait and see who signedt he most/best OL. well the vols signed 2 ol and the next day he plans his last official visit of his 5 to knoxville..thats wierd

i think miami is out, his brother is unhappy there (is how we lost jimmy clausen and chris leak)

commitments mean very little nowdays , i think we have a good chance

as for depth at RB...hardesyty is a sr, more of a situational back, creer will get the bulk of carries as a junior...seriously though, bryce brown will start if he comes, hed start for 98% of the college teams. this shit is sick : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LaMgTHr_Zo

on the other hand, its even been mentioned he may skip college and go to canada - heh , we will all know soon i guess

Butler, his "mentor" is toxic and it looks to me like he has infected miami.

Hopefully he decides to go to the program that he not Butler deems best for him.

Just saw more pictures of her for the 1st time. I had only see the one at the presser. She isn't as impressive as I intially thought.

Kind of like a player that runs an impressive 40 at a camp and then can't play on the field.

I think runner is for real, but Arthur the LB isn't up to the level and won't be a stud at Miami and won't make it to the next level.

That dude who is their mentor, what is wrong with their parents, not to mention that he is convicted felon.

SEC says Kiffin violated code of ethics<SCRIPT language=javascript1.1 src="http://gannett.gcion.com/addyn/3.0/5111.1/133600/0/0/ADTECH;alias=news.wbir.com/stories_ArticleFlex_1;cookie=info;loc=100;target=_blank;grp=355760;misc=1233871361257"></SCRIPT>

Southeastern Conference Commissioner Mike Slive has issued a public reprimand to University of Tennessee head football coach Lane Kiffin for his public comments made earlier today.
"Coach Kiffin has violated the Southeastern Conference Code of Ethics," Slive said in a release. "SEC Bylaw 10.5.1 clearly states that coaches and administrators shall refrain from directed public criticism of other member institutions, their staffs or players."
"The phone call to which Coach Kiffin referred to in his public comments is not a violation of SEC or NCAA rules. We expect our coaches to have an understanding and knowledge of conference and NCAA rules."

Southeastern Conference

--------

in case you missed it...this past weekend Nukeese Richardson was visting Knoxville and Urban Meyer was blowing Richardson up with phone calls during the entire visit, like a scorned ex-girlfriend. Kiffin called him out in a press conference this morning, and now Florida's AD Jeremy Foley is asking for a public apology and has even went crying to Mike Slive about it.
