The Los Angeles Lakers are in "serious discussions" with Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski about their coaching vacancy.

Krzyzewski, a Hall of Fame coach, has led the Blue Devils to three national championships in almost a quarter-century at the school. He informed school officials that the Lakers had contacted him about the job, Duke athletic director Joe Alleva said Thursday.

Krzyzewski was not available for comment, the school said. A message left with Lakers spokesman John Black was not immediately returned.

Alleva said he and Duke president Richard Brodhead recently had dinner with Krzyzewski and told the coach they wanted him to finish his career at Duke.

"We have long believed that Mike is the best coach in the country," Alleva said in the statement. "The Lakers' interest in him merely confirms what we have known."

Krzyzewski has compiled a 621-179 record in 24 seasons at Duke, leading the Blue Devils to NCAA championships in 1991, 1992 and 2001. Under Krzyzewski, the Blue Devils have 10 Final Four appearances, eight Atlantic Coast Conference tournament championships and 10 conference regular-season titles.

His Duke teams have been ranked No. 1 in 12 different seasons, including each of the last seven years.

Duke news conference scheduled at 5:45 ET on ESPN News. Not sure what will be said, maybe just that there is a possibility of Coach K. going to LA. Longshot IMHO.

He could not recruit anymore..All the great players going to the next level..maybe he feels its his turn to try and see how he would do in the league where they play for pay..

I hope he goes..It will be interesting to see his intensity at the next level..

It must be very frustrating at the college level to watch all these talented kids bypass collegiate hoops..

It is a transitional time in college hoops and in the ACC in particular, as the league landscape will be changing dramatically with expansion of the Big East schools coming in...

Duke will not quite have the home cooking they have enjoyed for all these years...the conference tourney will no longer be played in the state of North Carolina almost every year...Coach K was not a big supporter of the expanding the league.

maybe it is time to move on...

Duke was hurt bigtime by NBA draft defections. The press conference was really a no news conference. Dick Vitale says NO WAAAY BABY does coach K. leave the Dukkies.

Mike has his eyes on catching that alltime win record I believe someday. He is in the NCAA. He is a Robert Knight student. Bobby will let him know a bad move.
