Lake Tahoe vs. Las Vegas

I'm trying to find a good place to re-locate in the next year. I currently live on East Coast. I made some wise investments and do not have to work anymore so I pursue a long-time hobby of mine--sports gambling as a "profession", although I probably shouldn't call it that since I do not rely on winnings to support my lifestyle.

Anyway, I would like to live where there is legalized gambling. Dooes anyone here live in Lake Tahoe? Is it mostly retirees or does it have a good nightlife (read: Women!) I know Vegas it kickin' but there are so many tourists and you are pretty landlocked, whereas Tahoe seems more low-key and of course, there's the Lake.

I plan on visiting Tahoe this Fall but thought I would get some input from y'all. I've been to Vegas a dozen times in the last few years but I wouldn't mind hearing from people who live there. I'm sure there is quite a difference whe you actually live there day in and day out......thanks in advance.

Many posters who have lived or do live in Las Vegas describe it as a hell hole, great to visit but you wouldn't want to live there.

There is no comparison with Lake Tahoe, which it seems you have never visited. It's a beautiful place summer and winter. Lake, skiing, golf, pine forests. I was there in April and found more development going in, but its still a great place to live. As an old married guy my idea of night life is poker but there are plenty of nubile Californians in ski season. I have met several young poker players in Reno who live in Tahoe and consider it paradise.

BTW, Northern and Southern Nevada are completely different in almost every aspect. In fact the only commonality is probably gaming.

Move to Tampa. Hang out with fishfry and make a living playing video poker on boats and sports gambling "on line."

Tahoe is paradise. Vegas is a pile of dirt with a blow dryer turned on to it 6 Month's a year.

Investment wise, the sky is the limit here. Tahoe is already over priced IMHO.

I know two people who lived in Tahoe. They both said the same thing its nice in the summer but awful in the winter.

I live mostly in Reno now so I could tell you about both. Tahoe is nice, but it will cost you a fortune to live up there, especially the Nevada side. If you are serious about being a sports bettor, I would not suggest it though, there is really only three betting lines to work with as Harrahs owns Harveys and the Cal Neva line is in the Horizon and Lakeside.

As for the comment about LV being a place to visit and not live, I think for most Reno and Tahoe would better fit that description. If you are anything of a city person you will go absolutely nuts living in the area. The town got excited when some third-string version of the Joffrey Ballet came, talking about how cultured things were getting. They were in town for two nights in a casino showroom! It sucks, short of living a family life or being a skiing addict I just can't suggest it. The people mostly have the mentality of either California escapee who can't get over the lack of traffic, or long-time local who wishes the city was still under 100,000. Either way it sucks, it is so bad guess what? When I do get stuck in a traffic jam in another city I get somewhat nostalgic! It just feels like living in Iowa to me. If you are really from NYC I think you would leave within a year. And as for the cold in Tahoe, there is plenty of it. The weather gets below freezing by the end of September at night. There are occasional 2 to 3 foot snowstorms. It never gets much over 40 for all the winter months. It isn't terrible weather, but for most people it would be too cold. Summer weather is great though. Reno is underrated for good weather, about the only thing it has going. It rarely snows and summer is pretty nice with cool nights.

And I don't get why you need to move to Nevada to pursue this. Pursue sports gambling elsewhere would be my advice. If anything, if you share the Oldmantime's phobic worries about getting busted doing it, Nevada should be the last state to live in. There are technically laws against it, they just don't enforce them. But remember there is a massive casino industry and if they truly thought that online gaming was starting to take their business they would press the spineless AG into action. Business is of course good, but who is to say 5 years from now business falls off and online players get blamed; stranger things have happened. Go to Florida or Texas where the gambling businesses are weak and you probably never will be bothered. No income tax in either, just like Nevada.

Madskillz, I would definitely recommend Wild Bill's advice.

Kiss1 gave an accurate description of Las Vegas. I should add that 8,000-12,000 people a month are moving in, causing overcrowding and high priced real estate. Highways are congested longer hours now with the constant influx. There is also a lot of road construction.

That said, getting around the strip to shop lines is much easier with the monorail. As you know the best sports betting opportunities by far are offshore.

I am in vegas for the next month and suffice to say it is worse then it was a few years back when i last lived here. It is really getting bad. I am in a vacation house right on the edge of the valley in summerlin and its nice but there are still those undesirables all around.I swear you walk around smiths or albertsons and 50% of the people look like either gang members, stone cold junkies or plain shit.
I am going to tahoe for the month of september (have been there 4 times over the last few years for about 1 month per trip)and am looking forward to it. If i had known it had turned to compton/l.a barrio east i would have just passed on vegas and spent 2 months in tahoe. I have 2 small children and am afraid to take them to see the sights (which says something as i grew up in queens, ny).Tahoe is the place to be.If my wifes and myselfs family was not on long island i would move there for good.Someone said it best in this thread.The only thing that vegas and tahoe share is gaming.Everything else is different. The weather, the sights, the atmosphere but most of all the class of people.Tahoe is mostly yuppies form northern california while vegas has turned into nothing more then gang members, lost souls and assorted white trash.

One last thing..I know you asked about the weather.In summer you can expect around 80 during the day and 50 at night.The winter is not as bad as some say.I am not a skier and still enjoyed the winter there.If you live in s/ lake tahoe or stateline its not much diufferent then new yorks weather but if you live by the passes or up on kingsbury grade expect a long winter.Feel free to ask any other questions as i have a pretty good knowledge of the area.

I'm partial to Tahoe, as I've lived here for 11 years. The weather is Perfect during the summer. highs between 70 and 85. no rain, just blue skies. It is tourist season though. The spring and fall are good too, crisp nights with the days between 50 and 70. The lack of people during those seasons make them very nice as well. It will snow a lot during the winter...rpob 200 inches at lake level but the roads are for the most part kept clear by the snowcrews. Except for a few days out of the year, never hard to get around. We are getting more and more "city" franchises in town for good or worse. (ex...6 starbucks). We do have 2- 6screen stadium cinemas now, a brnad new NHL regulation ice rink, and some great restaurants. And if you want to get away from the developement, you are 10 minutes from hiking trailheads, where you will see no one on some days. Great camping, hiking, mt. biking., boating, etc. As far as culture, they are right..we are lacking. It is getting more yuppieish but mostly the spirit of the town is still small ski-bum town, with people sick of the crowded city life. Really good people for the most part. But since you are retired and disposable income doesn't seem to be an issue, San Fran is only 3 hours away...plenty of culture obviously. I take many day trips to see the Giants or the A's in the summer. As for sportsbetting, there are the 3 big guy lines from harrahs, caesars, and calneva but there is also a soft local line at the lakeside casino but it only has dime limits. Brand new casino 30 minutes away in carson, fangdango, with very soft lines as well. They really want your action. And on the snowy days, when you don't want to drive, light up the fireplace and go online to bet.
Housing...2000 sq ft house about 400,000 and rising every day...3 bedroom condo about 300,000. Rent for a 3 bedroom home is running 1100 a month.

You could get the hell out of there for a nice long vacation somewhere warm in the winter. That would probably help a lot to get thru the cold months
