SEATTLE - It apparently is not true that Kevin McHale went around the locker room Friday offering $10,000 bonuses to the men who will guard Sam Cassell tonight, if they hold the former Timberwolves point guard to 10 points or less.
Couldn't happen. McHale, the Wolves' vice president of basketball operations, isn't on the road trip.
Make no mistake, though, there will be a game within a game when the Wolves face Cassell and the rest of the Los Angeles Clippers at Staples Center. McHale, the man who traded Cassell after two seasons for Marko Jaric (with other pieces), won't be in the house but that likely won't stop Cassell from playing with a point to prove.
"There's no vendetta between me and Minnesota," the veteran point guard claimed to L.A. reporters Friday. "I just don't like how it ended. There were some differences there but they went on, and I'm going on. There are no hard feelings. I wish the Timberwolves all the success -- until they play us."
The Wolves figure Cassell will be psyched to face them, and they'll try to return the energy.
"He's going to want to make a statement, and it's going to be emotional for him and for us," Mark Madsen said. "We love Sam for his work ethic, for his personality, for the player he is."
