News footage of therapist and academic Dr. Mariam Al-Sohel making claims she can “cure” homosexuality has surfaced online.
In the Kuwait City-based Scope TV broadcast, which first aired in March, Al-Sohel claimed to have invented an anal suppository which can supposedly reverse homosexuality. According to the Middle East Media Research Institute, which translated Al-Sohel’s words and posted the clip to its Twitter account last week, her treatment will kill the parasitic “anal worm that feeds on semen,” which she says causes homosexuality.
Al-Sohel said her suppository for men and women can “curb the sexual urges of boys of the third gender as well as the fourth gender, which is butch lesbians.”
In Kuwait, homosexuality and cross-dressing are condemned under the country’s “debauchery” law and punishable by long prison sentences.
“By the way, this is all science, so there is nothing to be ashamed of,” Al-Sohel said.
The host of the program, which some are calling Kuwait’s answer to “The View,” seemed to agree, saying: “Of course not. It’s prophetic medicine. It’s all in the books.”
Patients who undergo Al-Sohel’s regimen are also put on a gender-specific diet of “sour, salty and sweet foods, in order to cleanse the body of poisons.” Bitter foods are especially important for men, the doctor alleges, because they supposedly “increase masculinity.”
Some social-media users are laughing off her claims.
