The past two weeks on a Sunday game I have noticed that the home team has wore a dark red jersey. It happened most recently this weekend in Atlanta as Atlanta wore a dark red jersey and a different hat than usual. Can anyone tell me why this was?

Thanks!!!!!

I'm not sure there is a solid reasoning other than team's decision. I know for example the Orioles wear black jerseys on Friday night home games. It was just a team decision there. Redsox also wear their red jersey's on certain home games.

1) Sunday Uniforms have always been different. It's a baseball tradition. Some teams used to wear vest-type uniforms on Sundays. You wear white at home, grey on the road, and alternates on Sundays. They aren't representing anything. Now it seems like they are picking out the main flashy color of the uniform and making it solid and wearing it as their Sunday uniform. Some traditional teams like the Yankees have never fallen into this new trend as they maintain tradition.

2) MLB makes money from apparrel sale. Alternate jerseys do not sell unless the players wear them at some point.

3) In the modern game players look forward to wearing flashier, stylish alternate jerseys as opposed to the classic-type of look. It's a 162-game season and it does get boring putting on the same thing everyday, or as fans watching the guys wearing the same thing everyday.

4) Some teams like the Padres have introduced army-style jerseys. I know a percentage of sales of those jerseys go towards the army, but the red jerseys are strictly Sunday jerseys.

5) Some teams will wear a dark alternate, like black or blue to kick off a night game series.

Later. :howdy:

Interesting that this question pops up here as in the Sunday Nashville sports section they did a very interesting article about the wearing of red and how in history the color red was to power and give fear to your oppent .. I know MLB isn't thinking this about the jersey color but they said for Tiger that was part of his wearing the red,,

Just thought I would add this,,

Ok...I'm going to add a question:

(AP) >>Tampa Bay Devil Rays right-hander Rob Bell allowed one run over two innings in an extended spring training game Monday, his first since being placed on the 15-day disabled list because of what the team called "personal and psychological issues."<<

What is an extended spring training game? tulsa

I think an extended training game goes for as long as necessary to get each team's player's a certain amount of work. Say x number of at bats or until x number of players get to hit or x number of pitchers get to pitch.

They also have simulated games where they 'pretend' to play - j/k - they may just play certain game conditions, not adhering to 3 outs and 9 innings like a normal game and maybe playing against a split squad

Now that I think of it, maybe that first thing is a simulated game, extended spring training may be a game against minor leaguers since the MLB starts earlier so their spring training is over - so playing aginst the minor leaguers before their season starts is 'extended' training

tulsa I think the bigger question is how severe do psychological issues have to be to land a guy on the DL?

I don't think I would want to hit off of a pitcher who just came off the DL with psychological 'issues'

Extended spring training is when each manager says "Hey I got 3 guys that need work, and we just signed this one guy out of the Mexican league and our GM wants to give him 2 innings." So they play to get extra pitchers work. Minor league rosters can get packed sometimes with the normal everyday career minor leaguers, the bonus babies that need development, guys just signed that need looks, and big leaguers down for rehab or spot starts for work. So they play a couple extra. Different minor league levels report at different times. You got rookie ball, low A, A, high A, double A, triples A, extended season A, short season A. When the college guys get their seasons over with they report a month after to short season A, so it's kind of spring training for those guys. You got the draft in early June, etc. But there is only 1 real deal spring training which is the one we all know.

I just re-read your question and my answer out of boredom and realized I thought you were talking about something different.
I thought you asked what is just some regular 'ole extended spring training game during spring training. I realize you meant what is the league of extended spring training. So let me clarify my answer.

Extended spring training is just that...an extended SESSION of actual spring training. After spring training is over and MLB begins, they have extended spring training that runs until about June. Extended spring training is for players with injuries or for players who don't really have a place to play for a full year yet. If a guy like Roger Cedeno didn't participate in spring training because of injury and the season started and he was activated, he would have played a couple games in extended spring training, before being called up. Or if an organization was stuck on where to put a guy for a full season because he's a bubble-guy, they would have had him stick around in extended spring training until they could find him an assignment whether it be minors somewhere or the big show. Most of the short season leagues begin in June, like short season A ball, so if those guys still don't have a place by then, they get assigned to a short season club. Some of the college guys drafted can fill in those short season rosters after their seasons are up too. Extended spring training is pretty much drills and practice games. They don't keep records, it's just to keep guys working who have no assignment yet, or for injured players to get some work away from big crowds.
