De Niro: IMO, they have got to have DNA evidence, undoubtedly sperm and/or hair they recovered as part of a 'crack' forensics team. Pun aside, Kobe obviously told his attorneys the truth or at least the part where he had sex with the woman, which is why they advised him to admit adultery in order to set up a defense that he simply had consensual sex.
The most curious thing to me in this whole affair is what the hell the woman's motivation would be if it wasn't sexual assualt? If it was just sex and she decided to rollover on him for money, why the hell would she go to the police, who based on the physical evidence would likely file a felony charge which Kobe could not possibly buy his way out of? I mean, how would extortion be the motivation? Or had Kobe had sex with her before during a past or past visits, some kind of relationship (according to the story below, he apparently nailed her shortly after checking in - pretty quick) in which she got pissed off because Kobe was ditching her and decided to fix his chit.
Kobe has a lot more to lose than the average guy, but let's be honest, adultery during a pregnancy is hardly grounds for annointing the guy as evil - a jerk, yes - but if it WAS sexual assault, then you can say more.
I'll wait until after the trial to decide - other than conjecture, I don't know anything about the evidence and I'm in no rush to lock up Kobe or exonerate him - that adultery admission to me so fast, though, could be a real warning sign.
EAGLE, Colo. — A prosecutor charged Kobe Bryant (search) with sexually assaulting a 19-year-old hotel worker Friday in a case likely to damage the reputation of one of the NBA's brightest and most popular young stars.
Bryant, 24, could be imprisoned from anywhere between four years to life in prison if convicted on the single felony count, Eagle County District Attorney Mark Hurlbert (search) said during a news conference.
In a statement released after the charge was announced, Bryant acknowledged that he "made the mistake of adultery" with the woman.
But he said he is not guilty of sexual assault: "I am innocent of the charges filed today. I did not assault the woman who is accusing me."
Bryant's wife also released a statement echoing her husband's innocence. "Because I know him to be innocent, I will stand by him and we will face this together," she said. "I will not let him face these accusations alone."
Bryant's attorney, Pamela Mackey, scheduled a Friday evening news conference at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Hurlbert did not discuss the details of the case. He said he reviewed all evidence during the last two weeks and consulted prosecutors around the state before making his decision.
"This did not come easily," he said.
The case is particularly shocking because Bryant, whose wife recently gave birth to a baby girl, has cultivated a wholesome, clean-cut image differing from the public personas of many NBA (search) stars.
Documents in the case, including the arrest warrant, have been sealed.
Authorities have said the Los Angeles Lakers star assaulted the woman June 30 at the gated Lodge & Spa at Cordillera (search) in nearby Edwards. He was in Colorado for knee surgery at a Vail clinic, and was booked at the lodge from June 30 to July 2.
Early July 2, Eagle County sheriff's deputies took Bryant to Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs for tests, later letting him leave in a taxi with his bodyguards.
The woman also underwent tests, and Hurlbert reviewed results from the state crime lab before making his decision.
Bryant surrendered to authorities July 4 and was released an hour later after posting $25,000 bond. The sheriff refused to release Bryant's booking photo for days.
The arrest was announced July 6, prompting a firestorm of media attention on this small mountain town 100 miles west of Denver. Reporters swamped the cul-de-sac where the woman lives with her parents, but she has said nothing publicly. Her family has consulted an attorney.
Bryant is a five-time All-Star who has already won three titles with the Lakers. He is by most accounts a quiet man who prefers dinner with a few friends to joining teammates for a night on the town.
Sports marketing experts say the case will be a permanent blow to Bryant's image, and could cost him millions in lost endorsements.
Bryant skipped high school to enter the NBA in 1996 at age 18. He has drawn comparisons to the league's greatest players as he has helped Los Angeles win consecutive titles from 2000-02.
Along with his determination, Bryant has also shown class, something many fans feel are missing from other NBA stars. He wept when the Lakers were eliminated from the playoffs by San Antonio in May, and he wore his hospital ID bracelet in a game the day after his daughter was born.
He married Vanessa Laine in April 2001. The two met on the set of a music video where Laine was working and got engaged while she was still in high school. Vanessa gave birth to their first child, Natalia Diamante Bryant, in January.
