Ichiro: 'I'm not dead yet'
Outfielder Ichiro Suzuki worked out with the Mariners on Monday at Safeco Field and appears ready and willing to be activated off the disabled list Wednesday.
Ichiro said missing the first seven games with a stomach ulcer has been difficult, but he appreciated that the Mariners put his No. 51 jersey up in the clubhouse to honor his absence during the season-opening road trip.
"It made me very happy," he said through an interpreter. "But at the same time, I'm not dead yet."
Indeed, Ichiro joked frequently with reporters prior to the workout and manager Don Wakamatsu said his return Wednesday appears inevitable. Ichiro will miss Tuesday's 3:40 p.m. home opener, but his 15-day disabled list stint ends Wednesday.
"We're going to watch him work out today," Wakamatsu said, "but everything looks like we're headed that way.
"He's a big part of this club, obviously, and has done a lot in this organization. It's nice to have the whole club together again."
Asked if he's been told by doctors how to avoid further ulcer problems, Ichiro grinned and offered this:
"They told me to stay away from the media."
Wakamatsu said Endy Chavez, who has led the club with a .379 batting average and three stolen bases during its surprising 5-2 start, would likely drop to either second or ninth in the batting order when Ichiro resumes his leadoff duties.
