Americans seem to take it all so personally. 'Dirty' play is just some tough love. I remember in yr 7 I played Flanker (usually wing) and this joeys kid tripped me over when I came off the scrum to take his scrumhalf (think linebacker -> QB). Next time I saw him I gave him a fistfull in the gut.
Sure the kid deserved it. Sometimes what a kid needs is a full blown ass whooping that only a grown man can provide. That said it wasn't the smartest thing for the dad to do but maybe he can plead temorary insanity.

The nearest official (possibly more than one) to this play should at least be suspended for the season.

Any parent that has a child get injured by an obvious cheapshot like this should not only be kicking someones ass, they should have someone in court.
Opposing coaches and officials could be held liable for medical damages.
Someone needs to get their hands on the game film and if numerous blatant cheapshots happened without game officials throwing flags and/or ejecting players, those officials are damn sure negligent.

No excuse for what the coach did, but I have believed this for a long time 'if a kid gets an unsportsman like penalty he should be thrown out of the game. If a team gets 3 in a game automatic forfeit. If a players gets 3 in a season he should be thrown off the team.
