is it just me or does a 2 year 20.5 million dollars deal seem like alot for him ?

he was on the DL from 2003 - 2007 ( with a few short comeback attempts sprinkled in there ) and came back last year with good numbers but nothing that puts him in the category of a top 10 closer i dont think.

anyone else have any thoughts ? just seemed like a very big number when i saw it especially for cleveland.

I was kind of surprised by the signing but then again im surprised by any free agent signing the tribe makes. This is Shapiro's biggest signing of his era with the tribe so maybe that a sign of good things to come. If Wood can produce like he did last year and stay healthy for 2 years I really like our chances this year with this bullpen( Kobayashi, J. Lewis, Perez, Betancourt, Smith and Wood)

not sure how you got that number. with 34 saves and a 20.5 million dollar contract i calculate that works out $602941.

or was your calculation based on him getting to maybe 6 or 7 saves before he blows out his shoulder / rotator cuff because that would be a solid prediction if you ask me.

Have to keep doing my math. Closer to 3.1 mil per save. But yeah I'd put Kerry Wood on my team any day with that arm. Definitely can pitch and throw hard, any team needs a reliever who can do that, it's just the money that players get these days to do that that gets me.

umm based on last years stats and assuming the exact same innings and pitches it is

$154600 per inning ( 66.1 innings last year )
and
$9335 per pitch ( 1098 pitches he threw last year according to espn.com )

i still think the numbers are too big considering his injury problems. i could understand if there was big incentives inside but guaranteed 20.5 million seems high to me.

well based on his 2008 salary of 28 million and his 510 AB's that works out to $54901 per AB.

he got 154 hits last year so he got paid $181818.

for his combined runs and RBI's ( every run he put on the board ) the yanks paid $135265

and i cant continue figuring out these sick numbers, it is depressing haha. if he gave me the paycheck from 1 hit from 1 year of his fresh 10 year deal it would blow my mind.

call him a choker, a homewrecker, a cancer etc but this dude knows how to get paid a TON of money even without any championships hahaha

the numbers for stats like starting pitcher wins get even sicker considering the salaries are still sky high but the stats are so much smaller.

for example johan santana made a little over 1 million per win with his $16,984,216 contract producing 16 wins.

CC sabathia earned his pay producing 17 wins while earning 11 million ( $687500 )

on the flip side barry zito fleeced the giants out of 1.45 million all 10 times he won in 08 with his 14.5 million dollar deal.

but he was not even within a sniff of the biggest bust i found which is one Carl Pavano of the Yankees ( alot of people probably dont even know he played for them haha ). he managed to turn 1 solid season in FLA in 2004 into a 4 year $40 million dollar contract. he then literally began to desintigrate injuring everything from his back to his shoulder to his forearm and on and on.

his contract expired this past summer and in 4 years ( he didnt even throw a single pitch in the 2006 season haha ) he produced a total of 9 wins along the way managing to set a new bar for total worthlessness to the tune of $4,444,444 per WIN !!
