Talk to 99% of coaches who will tell you that you don't full court press woo a kid who has long since verball committed elsewhere. Not an NCAA rule, but a costomary practice among coaches. They just don't do it. Except for Sampson. There's no line he won't cross. That includes specific NCAA regs tool hence he's on probation. IU will be on probation within 4 years guaaranteed. These things come back to bite you in the ass. Reputation matters.

Not so sure here. This kid was hedging and the father was too. A close call in a ROUGH Business.

The Indiana slant on things. He shouldn't have made a verbal committment then.

Sampson is indeed a scumbag but the bright side is this kid is probably looking to go NBA after his freshman year.

I agree. It is a rough business. Sampson hiring those "friends" shows he is a slimeball. He is not very ethical. Ferocious business though.

Ok, I officially agree Sampson is a scumbag. He must get a lot of hatemail and emails and nasty call outs during games.

He was hedging after Sampson came in and put the full court press on him and hired his dad's buddies. He had previously verbally committed. Not just saying that he was leaning toward Illinois. 99.9% of verbal committments are met and when they aren't it's normally because something has specifically changed at the school (new coach, probation, etc.), it's not because a new school came in and spent day and night and everything else to change his mind.

True he should have never verbally committed to Illinois but I have known for months the kid had changed his mind to IU.. 2 days after Sampson was signed Eric had already asked his dad to go visit IU and told him he would like to reconsider... The kid has had IU posters and and an IU flag hanging from his walls since he was 10.. Eric just flat out despised Mike Davis; as well as the rest of the team did....AJ Ratliff told Eric not to play for IU because of Mike Davis, so once he left the door was open for Eric Gordon to join the Hoosiers.... These are facts not the horseshit you read in the newspapers... I feel for the Illini and their loss but the kid went where his heart truly led him.....with that said Kelvin Sampson is a piece of shit but this is IU basketball and they will win with him...unfortunately never been an IU fan!!!!!

It wouldn't look near as bad if Gordon commits to Indiana a week or two after Sampson took the job (if he was concerned about Mike Davis). Sampson hires the Gordon posse in, and he changes.

Reminds me of the Chris Webber recruiting. Webber was a Mich St fan, but somehow ends up at Michigan and is linked to Ed Martin. Would not surprise me if there is a "friend of the program" down there too.

Enjoy your Big 10 basketball this year fans, because Gordon and Oden (Ohio St) will be moving on after this year.

<!--StartFragment -->Not saying it's what's happened here, but what's to stop a top recruit from 100% committing for a long time to Team A knowing all the while that he is going to end up signing with it's chief rival, Team B, at the last minute knowing that in so doing he can harm rival Team A by making other recruits bypass Team A because prize recruit is presumably going there?

The answer is nothing. Therein lies a serious problem.....that WILL happen sometime unless it is addressed.

Then the kid and his parents are just as scum. Why not tell Illinois? I'm not a Illini booster or anything like that. Just read it in the Sun-Times today.

My reason is above. They had probably all decided months ago he was going to IU but Sampson told him to string Illinois along so they would be hamstrung in recruiting other kids. Call me a cynic. But would this surprise anyone? Makes perfect sense.

It is true. No NCAA problems. No cheating. His players went to class, OR ELSE. He ran a squeaky clean program for years and noone can deny. Yet he is attacked while scumbag Sampson is not.

Ok Knight had a few minore problems like grabing player by throat, punchign Dickie V in the face, showing team his soiled toilet paper, etc....

but the man could coach. AND the right way.

My speculation as to what happened:
1. Indiana hires Sampson knowing his connections to Gordon.
2. Sampson has boosters get in Gordon's dad's ear asking him what it will take to get his kid.
3. Gordon Sr. says hire Jeff Meyer and Travis Steele.
4. Sampson hires Jeff Meyer and Travis Steele.
5. Gordon visits IU. Gordon's dad knows he's going there.
6. Sampson tells dad to have his son take his time. No need to rush. No need to tell Illinois. Wait for Midnight Madness day to spring it.
