BOSTON -- James Shields' night didn't last long. After hitting Dustin Pedroia with a 94-mph fastball in the first inning, giving up a single to J.D. Drew and allowing a titanic home run to Manny Ramirez, Shields quickly found himself down, 3-0.
He found himself out in the second inning after hitting Sox center fielder Coco Crisp, igniting a benches- and bullpens-clearing fracas.
After being hit in the left thigh, Crisp -- the son of a former boxer -- threw his bat and helmet to the dirt and charged the mound. Shields missed on his first punch but Crisp connected on a jab as catcher Dioner Navarro wrapped him from behind. At that point an enormous scrum had formed near the mound.
When the dust settled and order was restored, after about 15 minutes, three players -- Shields, Crisp and Rays designated hitter Jonny Gomes -- were ejected.
The melee was a followup to incidents in Wednesday's game, a 5-1 Sox win, in which Crisp took exception to Rays shortstop Jason Bartlett using his knee to block second base as Crisp was sliding in on a steal attempt. Crisp was safe on the play, but his left thumb was wrapped after the game.
"The intent [on the steal play] was to make an out," manager Joe Maddon said before Thursday's game. "The intent there was not to hurt, injure, [disable], etc."
Later in Wednesday's game, with Maddon on the mound during a pitching change, Maddon and Crisp, in the Boston dugout, exchanged heated words.
Despite Wednesday's incident, warnings did not appear to be given to the teams after Shields hit Pedroia.
Maddon said before Thursday's game that he did not expect any escalation of the events from Wednesday.
"No, I think the Red Sox got it. They get it," he said. "I have a lot of respect for the entire staff over there. [Sox manager] Terry [Francona] is not only one of the finest managers in this game, but he's also one of the finest people, and that speaks for the whole team. It's a classy group, and I am sure that they did not advocate what had happened [on Wednesday] also."
The Rays lost the first two of the three-game series with the Sox and had lost five straight to Boston entering Thursday's game after sweeping a three-game series at home in April.
