Were you playing hold'em?

Yes Sir..

Ok, It was J 6 8 offsuit was flop and I had like 10 7 chased all the way to river and got a straight. The guy that beat me got a flush on the river with only a pair of 6's going into final card.

He was raising 40 dollars ect.

I think I got bad beated.

Then I had 2 highest pairs next hand and player end up getting 3 of a kind with a pocket pair of 3s or something.

AK,

Normally I'd say you were just unlucky but not in this case. Guess what, you didn't lose! Why not? Party Poker doesn't have $20-40 hold'em. I guess you just thought you lost...:money8:

On both hands you were outflopped, drew out on the turn and then you were rivered. The first hand was a little unlucky but the second hand was your fault... 7-3 ain't worth $5.00, little blind or not. Better luck next time

Anyone have a suggestion on a book to read?

First, get off the big tables. You're going to get beat while you learn; why not make the lessons cheaper?

If you've never read a book on limit hold'em before I'd start with Winning Low Limit Hold'em by Lee Jones. The starting hand recommendations and general strategy wll stop the bleeding. Read it once (should take about 4 hours or so), then go to a small table to try out the strategy.

Then read The Theory of Poker by David Sklansky. Expect to be confused the first time; it reads like a grad level textbook. Of the four I'm recommending this one is probably the most important. I'd tell you to read it again but you'll probably need a break from it.

Then read Small Stakes Hold'em by Sklansky, Mason Malmuth, and Ed Miller. Read it twice. This one will relace Lee Jones, but beware of the aggressiveness it advocates. Take one aspirin at a time, not the whole bottle at once.

Then read Hold'em Poker for Advanced Players by Sklansky and Malmuth. Read this one twice as well. This is the book for the higher limit games. Ignore the chapter on loose games...that's what you've got Miller's book for.

Then make Theory of Poker, Small Stakes Hold'em, and HPFAP your power rotation for limit hold'em. I have read them all at least five times and I continue to learn from every book every time.

As far as the posted hands go, if you had raised your AQ pre-flop you would have won the hand right there. You should have folded the other hand as fast as you could.

I think you need to buy a book and then start playing at 1-2 or lower tables. You dont have a real grasp on what starting hands to play or how to play them and starting out at higher limits is a recipe for disaster.

You can do a search online for the rankings of starting hands

these are two books i would buy if i was starting as a beginner:
Theory of POker, by Sklansky
and then
advanced holdem poker by sklansky

You can find other books after that to adjust your game, but these 2 books will give you a good starting point.

Thank You so much for the information.

Hard to make a quick buck or two on them higher end tables.

AK - if you play 10-20 as a beginner you are going to lose a fortune before you get any good. I would start even lower than 1-2. Try the lowest game available and don't move up until you're at least winning a little.
