I can honestly say, I have been behind the wheel of a car once in my life when I shouldn`t have been...

I can also honestly say drinking beer and drinking to the point of being drunk seems impossible to me personally...not that I have ever been a big beer or alcohol drinker,lol..once though while on a date, I had this girl feeding me Rum and Cokes (which I never did before or since, lol) and about 3AM she says to me 'well I think its time to go' ...so off I went,lol..I couldn`t see straight and I was about a half hour from home and had just bought a brand new 3000GT , this was back in 1992 when they first came out and I wasn`t about to wrap it around a telephone poll...

It was the only time I could honestly say I should not have been driving, took all I had to try and focus on the road...and like I said earlier the last time I let some lush feed me rum and coke, I must have had, hell I don`t even know...all I know was I expected a little shnick/schnak and all I got was my hand roaming around on an empty ballfield,lol..

Just thought I ask since we have so many party animals, just how many beers can you handle and then drive?

Maybe I should have rephrased the question, I am not making light of drunk driving, I am just curious what most of the drinking crowd thinks about the subject...

1 per hour. Any more would be toon risky. It's pretty easy to blow a 0.08.

I think that I can drink a 6 pack and be fine driving. Think = key word. I know for a fact that I would likely register .08 though, so if I am drinking, i do not even consider leaving the house behind the wheel and I will not ride with friends who are drinking.

Don't know any more - most I ever have is 2 beers, otherwise someone else drives.

But here are a few facts:

"According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) the average 170-pound male would have to consume more than four 12 ounce cans of beer within one hour on an empty stomach to reach .08 BAC. The average 137-pound female would need to consume at least three cans of beer in one hour on an empty stomach to reach that same level. NHTSA also found that in 1998, 38% of all motor vehicle-related fatalities involved alcohol. This translates more than 15,000 alcohol-related deaths. Lowering BAC limits from .10 percent to .08 percent is an effective method of saving lives. According to a study by Hingson et al., if all states lowered their BAC limits to .08, alcohol-related highway deaths would decrease by 500-600 per year."

I'd have to agree - I think the NHSTA stats are a little too generous, which is strange. But as I said, they ain't gonna have to worry about me - life's too short to get behind the wheel of a car and kill some poor bastard because you're too busy worrying about yourself.

I had no idea you could drink that much and still be okay to drive....not that I am planning on drinking anything....no wonder I never felt drunk,lol...I wasn`t!

Another thing about drinking, I have never undrstood why people "need" to drink...I know they say its hereditary (alcoholism) and I guess that could be why...but how someone gets drunk all by them self, I just don`t get that one...

then again, some may not 'get' how a 34 year old man can sit there watching 8 basketball games in one night and have bets on them and get all ticked off over it ,lol...and turn around and do it again and again, and somehow enjoys it!

Beer doesn't get me there. Hard alcohol will get me drunk. Beer just doesn't taste that good to me. Never has.

Hey Wil, that is a great chart over there, cheers...

As for me, I believe in order to drive I shouldn't drink more than five Pilsen or seven Imperial, be said.

Anymore than that, would have in need of a designated driver or a cab...

Agree with mvbski,
This is NOT something to joke about.
If you are going to drink, get a cab or have a friend drive you.
You are DEAD WRONG if you think, I can have a few drinks, I don't get drunk from beer.
There is nothing wrong with drinking, but it is VERY WRONG to drink and drive.

Well I don`t expect the drunks to come in here saying they pound down 10 beers then go down the freeway....no one`s going to admit it...

I`d have to think a few minutes just to remember the last time I had 1 beer....but what had me thinking about this was on my way home earlier, I was at a stop light and 4 state troopers had pulled over this tractor trailer and had him trying to walk a straight line (which it didn`t look like he was able to) and this guy was driving a tractor trailer!!

I don`t know how many saw it nationally but here in Maryland last month a gasoline tanker overturned and flipped off an interstate ramp exploding onto the expressway underneath and killing 5 people...it was an incredible scene, no one will ever know why or what caused the tanker to go off course that much...he very well could have been smashed, who knows..

I went to college in a small town, so drinking and driving was commonplace.

Not saying it was right, but it is easy to rationalize when you only have to drive five minutes. "Sure, I drank 12 beers tonight. But I haven't had anything in the last hour...and my apartment is only five minutes away!" Not proud of it, but one time I was so drunk that I woke up in my car. I drove home, parked my car, and then I passed-out. Woke up five hours later!

Other than college, I'm very careful about drinking/driving. Not worth the risk. Even if you don't have an accident, you still have to worry about the cops. If you're driving @ 4am, they're looking for any bullshit reason to pull you over.
