Just got back from the Bahamas-they have Sportsbooks there

I just got back from visiting the Island of Freeport in the Bahamas and found a fairly nice Sportsbook there in the casino. I had a free room for three nights at the Isle of Capri-they opened there 5 months ago. They said they are waiting for their license for a sportsbook from the government and should have it in a few months. The other casino-I think it was called the Oasis, about 10 minutes away had the sportsbook in it.
The wildest thing I ever I found out is the fact that no Bahama citizen are allowed to gamble at their casinos or sportsbooks. Purely for tourist. They say it is good for jobs, but don't want locals to gamble because crime would increase - thinking the losers may be wanting to rob folks to get their money back.

I read where Las Vegas was that way in the 40's through at least 60's. It was considered an unwritten rule that if you worked in casinos(and obviously lived locally) you were not to gamble in that or any other casino.
Also, in many nominally illegal casino areas in the U.S. in that era all the locals were paid a small sum per year NOT to play in casinos because they only wanted tourists to come and lose money and then go home. Hallendale in the Meyer Lansky days was a prime example. Now, Las Vegas corporations don't care they just consume their own or anybosy that shows up with money with the locals' casinos.

One of the local employees I visited with said he would fly out to Vegas every 5 years or so to go gamble when he took his vacation. They want to get away and gamble just like the rest of us.

I was surprised they had books there. I put on my customs suggestion to them to advertise the sportsbooks more because people don't know they have them there. The casinos beat me for about $2500 but I got it back plus some change on the Lakers game 1. I bet it offshore with the reduced juice though. I didn't bet at the sportsbook there because I no reduced juice and I didn't want to have to take a taxi back across town the next day if I won.

there is also a sportsbook in the atlantis resort inside the casino,they except all sports and horses but no nhl.I think the book is called pagusus.

Atlantis and Wyndham (cable beach) both have sportsbooks. I stayed at the Wyndham...Sportsbook was ok.

I take it there is no way the Bahamas' government would allow their sportsbooks to take internet bets?

The Bahama govmt seems to be pulling some of the right strings to get some tourists there. They are just 45 miles off the southern Florida coast.
Keith-That may be a stretch, but would be another nice option.
