On Monday afternoon, Roy Williams said at his regularly scheduled press conference he would have more information about the extent of Kennedy Meeks' injury later in the day. The news he relayed on his radio show Monday night was not especially positive.
"It's not good," the head coach told Jones Angell. "He did not practice today. We don’t know what it will be later in the week. He did not practice today at all. We’ll just have to wait and see. They’re not completely ruling him out, and they’re not saying he can play. Let me say it that way: I don’t think we’ll have him, but we’ll just have to wait and see.”
Meeks suffered a sprained left knee with approximately three minutes remaining in Saturday's win over Arkansas in the round of 32. His lack of practice time on Monday doesn't necessarily mean anything for a game scheduled for Thursday night at 7:47 p.m. Eastern. However, if he doesn't show improvement in time to practice later in the week, he won't be in the lineup. "If he doesn't practice Wednesday, it would be hard for him to play on Thursday," Williams said.
Meeks, who leads the team in field goal percentage and ranks second in rebounding and third in scoring, has started 31 games as a sophomore but has had a difficult final month of the season. He missed the ACC Tournament opener against Boston College due to illness, and then was plagued by foul trouble in the game against the Razorbacks and played just 15 minutes. He has averaged 21.2 minutes per game in Carolina's last five contests after averaging nearly 25 per game for the balance of the season.
Carolina will depart for Los Angeles tonight before practicing in Los Angeles on Tuesday and Wednesday. The next scheduled media availability for the Tar Heels--and thus, the next likely update--will come Wednesday at 4 p.m. Eastern time.

most of the time a team will play ok when they know for sure a star player will not play for 1 game and will step up, the 2nd game is when the problem sit in

LOS ANGELES — The University of North Carolina is still in wait-and-see mode with Kennedy Meeks’ knee injury ahead of their Sweet 16 game against Wisconsin, but the sophomore forward did take a step forward Tuesday.
Meeks participated in the non-contact portion of the Tar Heels’ 90-minute practice at USC’s practice facility and will be reexamined before Wednesday’s practice to get a gauge of the swelling and discomfort.
The Tar Heels are scheduled to hit the court at noon local time (3 p.m. EDT) Wednesday at the STAPLES Center for a practice open to the media and fans. That will be followed by a press conference with Roy Williams at 1 p.m.
Meeks suffered a sprained left knee in the final minutes of UNC’s 87-78 win over Arkansas Saturday in Jacksonville. The Charlotte native is the Tar Heels’ second-leading rebounder and third-leading scorer.
No. 4 seed UNC will play No. 1 Wisconsin at the STAPLES Center Thursday at 4:47 local time.

WRAL:

Los Angeles — Just four days after spraining his left knee, North Carolina sophomore forward Kennedy Meeks was able to participate fully in Wednesday’s practice at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles ahead of a Sweet 16 match-up against No. 1 seed Wisconsin.

Meeks went through all the drills, which included rebounding and low-post spin moves, but elected to sit out the end-of-practice dunk exhibition. He said that he fully expects to play Thursday and estimates he will be at roughly 95 percent.

“I would be surprised (if I don’t play tomorrow), but it’s coach’s decision,” Meeks said following practice Wednesday. "I'm not trying to force anything, but I'm going to do everything I need to do tonight to prepare for the game tomorrow."
