USA Today reports that GOP leadership is pushing for Jon Kyl as a replacement for soon-to-be retiring Chief Justice William Rehnquist, who is 80 and fighting cancer. It is actually fairly common to make the leap from Senator to Supreme Court Justice, as it has been done dozens of times before.

We all know that Jon Kyl is the greatest opponent of internet gambling in the political realm. He has been introducing legislation for the past 5 years aimed at either 1) federally criminalizing the ACT of placing a wager (ie not just go after the bookies) and/or 2) federally criminalizing moving money to bet on the internet (ie make it illegal to knowingly send money to bet on the net). However, his legislation never went all the way because of the weight of the political process (ie all of the conflicting interests could not pull together and reach a consensus).

Now, with that being said, I would submit if Kyl were to become a Supreme Court Justice, he would be a thousand times more powerful in advancing his anti-internet gambling agenda. He would be directly ruling on any cases before the supreme court governing internet commerce, gambling issues, and of course, internet gambling issues. With one stroke of the pen, he could accomplish what he was unable to do in Congress, expand interpretation of the existing wire acts to unequivocably restrict all forms of internet gambling. Furthermore, he could advance evangelical morality in general throughout all walks of American life.

What I don't understand is why any of you hard-core internet gamblers would EVER in your right minds vote Republican or support the Republican agenda. You are doing nothing but shooting yourselves in the foot. Hell, you are probably putting a grenade up your ass, if you actually one of the guys good enough to make a living doing this. :lolBIG: :finger:

For a long time, I've toyed with the idea of moving to Nevada or elsewhere. IF this man becomes a Supreme Court Justice; I'm no longer toying with the idea of leaving the US for Canada or elsewhere........I'm starting to pack!!!!!! :suomi:

Also if the Congree confirms him as a Justice....it speaks CLEARLY of the direction this country has taken. This man defines the word "hate" for me.

Dante, anybody can introduce legislation in congress. All one has to do is call the chief of staff of your local congressman and give him or her your idea for a new bill and if the congresman likes it, he/she will draft up a bill codifying your idea and sponsor it. Now lets say Jon Kyl as a Supreme Court Justice calls his congressman (his buddy and close friend John McCain) and asks him to reintroduce his latest version of the Kyl Anti-Internet Gambling Bill of 2006. Do you think his congressman will do it? You bet your ass he will.

Now lets say the bill passes and it contains provisions that: 1) make the act of placing a wager on the internet a federal felony 2) make the act of using money transfer services like Neteller and Firepay a federal felony and 3) allow warrantless wiretapping and warrentless monitoring of ISP providers for net bets and 4) allows for federal jurisdiciton to attach to NON U.S. CITIZENS LIVING ABROAD. Lets say you are convicted of violating that new legislation and a challenge goes all the way to the Supreme Court to rule on its constitutionality...You get the idea.

Also, lets say the "silent majority" in the US that enjoys an occassional $50 internet bet on the superbowl or march madness "rises up" and throws out their congressman for supporting such legislation in the next elections. However, what are they going to do about Supreme Court Justice Kyl? NOTHING. Lifetime appointment, baby.

Clearly, a Supreme Court Justice is far more powerful than a Senator will ever be.

Although he will have more political influence I think the political climate drastically changed after 9/11. There are just way bigger fish to fry. The Kyl bills never went anywhere because of too many varying interests against and the impossibility of enforcing anything that did become law. They have trouble stopping invasive viruses that cost world corporations billions of dollars. And like any other American vice, the people want it. When you prohibit something everybody does and is socially acceptable, it drives the revenue streams to the wrong people. He used that legislation to make a name for himself. He made a name, and the legislation never went anywhere. His agenda was met, and he will move on to bigger and more pressing matters. If he gets there.

OF, as long as the evangelical right has a strong influence in the GOP, anti-net gambling legislation will still be a fairly major issue. If not Kyl, someone else will pick up the banner. Look at where it has gotten Kyl, if the evanglelical right is backing him to replace Rehnquist. Onward Christian Soldiers.....

Hey, if you are going to be moving back to Ariz, you will have much more of a say in the direction of his career than I will ever have... you and your family can at least get some votes in against him.:digit:

I know, the bible thumpers want me to love Jesus. I just think with the proliferation of poker, and it's wideapread acceptance the pendulum has swung the other way. I doubt they would even persue Jay these days. Media is advertising sites in all outlets, magazines, televsion, radio. And I cannot see seperating poker from sports. Even ESPN the magzine is running off shore poker ads, could help there programming. WSOP is a monster with unrestrained growth. Too much momentum to stand in front of now. Polictical suicide if you suggest banning people from their poker. Ya think?

You can spin it any way your heart desires.....the public loves poker on line....they enjoy rcreactional betting....the climate is changing in the direction of allowing internet wagering....they would not go after Jay Cohen today.....and so forth and so on......IF Kyl is nominated and approved by the US CONGRESS as a Supreme Court Judge.....the whole internet gaming movement has been set back 20 years minimum.....

I'm not religious....but time to PRAY this DOES NOT HAPPEN.
