Porter on Vick: 'All it was was dogs'

Miami Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter commented on the possible reinstatement of former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick and, as usual, Porter shot right from the lip, according to a report on EPSN.com. Vick was convicted for his role in a dogfighting ring and is serving time in a Kansas federal prison. He's scheduled to be released next summer.
"He's already been punished enough," said Porter (referring to Vick's possible reinstatement after serving his sentence), who owns a pair of pit bulls and a Maltese. "They gave him his penalty. He paid his penalty. What else should they do to him now?
"All it was was dogs. They act like they don't even like pit bulls anyway. That's the funny thing about it if you want to get back on that topic. I got pit bulls, I got to put them under a different breed just to travel. So you can't even fly pit bulls nowhere.
"It's a breed they don't care about. It's not like he was fighting cocker spaniels or something that they like. They don't really care too much about pit bulls."

Personally this makes me feel a little sad and reinforces my opinion of Porter as a scumbag.

If he has dogs-why? He doesnt apparently love them, theyre 'just dogs'.If he doesnt love them, why own them I wonder.Status symbol? What a joke.

With advocates like Porter Im sure Vick will back real soon.

He's just a dumb black man. Why anyone asks his opinion on anything is beyond me? Would you ask a child in special ed what they think on this topic? Something tells me no. Likewise in this case. Sure he can play football at an impressive level but that makes him no bright bulb.

Off to fight my cocker spaniel today because everyone likes spaniels.

I am the first one to put a dog down. Strays, rabid, unwanted, sick, whatever...put em down.. they ARE just dogs..

But what Vick was doing to them goes against decency and moral standard. He should never get reinstated to the NFL.

Pet Peeve of mine.

He's just a dumb black man.

Why is it necessary to use the adjective black in the sentence describing Joey Porter. Dumb is one thing but a person's skin color is simply a physical trait that should have nothing to do with the topic being discussed, which is dogs.

I disagree that everyone does it and even if that were true does it make it right. I served in VietNam many years ago with several different ethnic groups represented in my unit (Cobra Gunship Squadron) the one thing I remember most clearly is that we were all equal and brothers who had each others back always regardless of ethnic persuasion.

I'm not saying its not wrong, nor am i saying they are not equal.

What I am saying is everyone stereotypes every once in a while. Its human nature.

I can understand where he's coming from they grew up around it. Its very rampant in poor economic areas in the south. In the area I grew up in which was 50-50 white black. Pretty much everyone I knew was fighting pitbulls.

When I typed out that particular post it's what came to mind. If he had been purple, white or green I would have mentioned that as well. He does happen to be dumb and black. Is he white? Is he brown? Is he purple? NO, he's black. Nothing more or less.

Very true HFK

What Vick did was sick and cruel no doubt, but what Porter said just sums up the feeling that alot of people have.
Its the south, right or wrong they fight chickens and dogs.

Just like some think they can pick winners in ball games, some think they can breed/train winners in animal fighting.

This is really bad. *sigh* But in China it's perfectly OK to eat dogs cats and snakes. Enough is enough.

In Japan they eat whale. etc etc we could go on for days about animal abuse.

I'm sure crazy legs Vick has learned from his mistakes.
Let him back on a team so I can watch him play.

Rediculously talented QB who can sprint all over stop on a dime and whip it 40 yards on the money.

Dog fighting is a historical phenomenon probably stretching back to the domestication of dogs. It spans cultures. Its why some breeds look the way they do. BULL dogs descend from dogs used for baiting BULLS. PIT bulls were bred for PIT fighting. WOLFhounds were used from hunting WOLVES.

Dog fights, bullfights, cockfights, boxing, ultimate fighting. Primates get off on violence, we get off on gambling. If people could figure out how to make their domestic cats fight, you bet your ass there'd be catfighting bouts.

What's interesting is why its no longer acceptable in America. You'd think, with the current crassness of American culture, it would be on prime time network TV.

this phenomena will not go away.

Joey Porter's dogs get loose, kill miniature horse
Thursday, September 21, 2006
By Mike Bucsko, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Charges could be filed by the end of the week over an incident Tuesday in which two dogs belonging to Steelers linebacker Joey Porter -- a pit bull and a mastiff -- got loose from Mr. Porter's Pine home and killed a miniature horse at a nearby farm.

The dogs, named Tina and Nemo, were still in the corral with the dead horse when police arrived about 4:45 p.m., said Chief Bob Amann, of the Northern Regional Police Department. The department includes Pine, Marshall, Richland and Bradford Woods.

The owners of the horse, Richard and Eleanor Bowers, were not home at the time and their home was occupied by a daughter, Chief Amann said. The Bowers yesterday declined to comment on the attack.

The 6-year-old American miniature horse was 29 1/2 inches tall, probably smaller than the two dogs. Mastiffs can weigh more than 200 pounds and stand nearly 6 feet on their hind legs.

Police knew immediately to whom the dogs belonged because the dogs had gotten free last year, but caused no problems, Chief Amann said. As a result, Mr. Porter was notified Tuesday and got the dogs under control after he arrived at the scene of the incident on Hill Haven Lane.

The dogs were later transported back to Mr. Porter's Tanglewood Drive home about a mile away by Triangle Pet Control Co. Inc. of McKees Rocks, with which Pine contracts for animal control problems.

Mr. Porter's back yard is completely fenced in, so police are not sure how the dogs got loose, Chief Amann said.

Police also notified the regional dog warden with the state Department of Agriculture, which has jurisdiction when a dog is involved in the death of livestock. The agency is acting in an advisory capacity and will coordinate charges and any subsequent issues with local police, said Chris Ryder, a Department of Agriculture spokesman in Harrisburg.

The state has a fund that pays up to $10,000 for damage or the death of an animal in a dog attack. Miniature horses average $4,000 in price.

Charges would be based on the state Dog Law and could include violations of the dangerous dogs and confinement of dogs sections. Other possible violations could result from checks on whether Mr. Porter's dogs were properly licensed and had received the proper rabies shots, Chief Amann said.

The charges are summary offenses with a maximum penalty of a $1,000 fine. There are other penalties for the dogs should a judge, in this case District Judge Regis Welsh Jr. in Hampton, determine that they are dangerous.

Mr. Porter issued this statement yesterday:

"I am saddened to learn that my dogs escaped from my yard and attacked and killed a horse. It was an accident and I am not sure how the dogs escaped. We have a very secure yard with a six-foot fence around it and this has never happened before. I have reached out to the owners of the horse and will do whatever I can to help them get through this very unfortunate situation."

Sorry ...

I love dogs but there are times after incidents like this when you put the animal down as a real threat to society

My God ... imagine if they found the young girl???
