[h=1]Jihadi John is finally unmasked: ISIS executioner is identified as former University of Westminster student from a respectable London family[/h]
  • Computing graduate Mohammed Emwazi, 27, from Queen's Park, London
  • Jihadi John has featured in ISIS videos with journalists and aid workers
  • Scotland Yard refuses to confirm name and Downing St won't comment

The Islamic State executioner known as 'Jihadi John' was today identified as a university graduate from London.
Mohammed Emwazi, 27, of Queen’s Park, west London, who studied computer programming at the University of Westminster, is believed to have travelled to Syria in 2012 and later joined ISIS.
Jihadi John has featured in the execution videos of American journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff, aid worker David Haines, 22 Syrian soldiers and Japanese journalist Kenji Goto.

The ISIS executioner known as 'Jihadi John' has been identified as Mohammed Emwazi from west London

Mr Emwazi was said to have been raised in a middle-class family and occasionally prayed at a mosque in Greenwich, south-east London.
One of Kuwait-born Mr Emwazi’s close friends identified him, telling a newspaper: ‘I have no doubt that Mohammed is Jihadi John. He was like a brother to me… I am sure it is him.’
And Asim Qureshi, research director a British human rights group Cage, who had been in contact with Mr Emwazi before he left for Syria, said he also believed the man was Jihadi John.

He told the Washington Post: ‘There was an extremely strong resemblance. This is making me feel fairly certain that this is the same person.'
The FBI said last September that authorities had been trying to identify Jihadi John using various investigative techniques including voice analysis and interviews with former hostages.
Scotland Yard said it would not confirm the name, because it would put lives at risk in a live operation.

Commander Richard Walton, of the Metropolitan Police’s counter-terrorism command, said: ‘We have previously asked media outlets not to speculate about the details of our investigation on the basis that life is at risk.
‘We are not going to confirm the identity of anyone at this stage or give an update on the progress of this live counter-terrorism investigation.’

Downing Street declined to comment on the reports. But David Cameron has repeatedly called for the infamous terrorist to be punished for his crimes.
In an interview with MailOnline last month, the Prime Minister revealed how he personally watched videos of the brutal beheadings of British hostages carried out by Jihadi John.
'These videos are absolutely horrific and depraved,' the Prime Minister said. 'And obviously I take the time to see what they are doing so I understand what families have been going through.'
Speaking in November, Mr Cameron said: ‘You should be in no doubt that I want Jihadi John to face justice for the appalling acts that have been carried out in Syria.’
Mr Emwazi’s most recent address was a flat in Leeve House, which is part of the Mozart Estate in Queen's Park - an area that has seen shootings and gang-related troubles in the past four years.
In September, it was revealed Jihadi John was known to MI5 before he travelled to Syria to join Islamic States.

I have no doubt that Mohammed is Jihadi John. He was like a brother to me… I am sure it is him
Close friend of Mohammed Emwazi

Horrifying: Jihadi John has featured in the execution videos of American journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff, aid worker David Haines, 22 Syrian soldiers and Japanese journalist Kenji Goto (pictured)

It was revealed security officials had identified him but his name and background were being kept secret to avoid jeopardising any hostage rescue missions.
Police and security agents said they also wanted to gather more information before raiding the homes of the fanatic’s family and friends.

Abdel-Majed Abdel Bary – a London rapper initially identified as a suspect – has been ruled out after analysis of his voice as well as his height and mannerisms.
The 23-year-old came to prominence last year after he posted a photograph of himself on Twitter holding up a severed head.
Other Britons from Portsmouth, Birmingham and Cardiff have been linked to John, who is said to have overseen the torture of hostages and to have led negotiations for French and Italian captives freed in return for ransoms.
It is claimed he was making street collections for genuine Arab charities based in London at the time he came to MI5’s attention.
There is no suggestion that MI5 or the police had any basis to stop him from travelling abroad.

There was an extremely strong resemblance. This is making me feel fairly certain that this is the same person

[h=3]UNIVERSITY WHERE JIHADI JOHN ATTENDED AMONG INSTITUTIONS WHERE GENDER SEGREGATION WAS PROMOTED[/h]Mohammed Emwazi's old university has been criticised for segregating male and female students during talks by Islamic scholars.
The University of Westminster was one of 21 university institutions which were found to promote gender segregation.
261DE45400000578-2970161-University_of_Westminster-a-85_1424955573881.jpg

Research by Student Rights, a group which aims to prevent extremism at universities, said that from September to March 2013, 46 events at 21 separate institutions were found to have been segregated.
At the University of Westminster, at least two events were found to have been advertised as ‘women only’.
The research found that on March 21, 2013 a debate entitled ‘Secularism vs. Islam’ was held by the Women’s Take on Current Affairs Society (WTCA), a Hizb ut-Tahrir front group, and featured Shohana Khan as a speaker.
When challenged by students as to why the WTCA was able to hold events segregated by gender, the Student Union Interfaith Officer allegedly claimed that the society’s events were ‘faith-based’, which exempted it from equal opportunities policy.
In addition to this, an event the following day was held by the Islamic Society called ‘The Concept of Love in Islam’ which was also advertised as ‘Sisters only’. It was logged by Student Rights for this reason.
Student Rights said that when a male student from the society complained about not being able to attend, the Islamic Society highlighted that segregated events were common on campus stating ‘we’ve had many brothers only events too...the information discussed in the only women talks/or notes can be put to the public after the talk...the topics at hand do not only concern women.’
The University of Westminster’s ‘Dignity and Diversity at Work and Study Policy’ states that: ‘The University of Westminster is committed to creating a stimulating, supportive, inclusive and accessible learning and working environment... The University has a legal responsibility to provide a healthy and safe working environment that is free from unlawful discrimination and harassment.’

Arabic speaker Emwazi has three brothers and sisters and first moved to Britain aged six.

The son of a minicab driver was reported to have been raised in a middle-class family and occasionally prayed at a mosque in Greenwich, south-east London.

But after graduating from university in 2009, he claimed to have been harassed and intimidated by security services - and complained to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

Emwazi alleged an agent from MI5 knew ‘everything about me; where I lived, what I did, and the people I hanged around with’ and claimed the organisation attempted to ‘turn’ him to work for them.

A picture began to emerge today of Emwazi’s background, including the details that:

  • The son of a mini-cab driver moved to Britain aged six, having been born in Kuwait
  • He has three brothers and sisters and they all lived in a council flat in west London
  • MI5 persistently tried to recruit him after he graduated from the University of Westminster
  • He claims counter-terrorism police arrested him in 2010 and put him on a terror watch list
  • This was to stop him leaving Britain but he still managed to flee the country for Syria in 2012
Asim Qureshi, research director a British human rights group Cage - who had been in contact with Emwazi before he left for Syria - said he also believed the man was Jihadi John.

Before he was named publicly, web searches for his name brought up only results from the electoral roll, listing various west London addresses where he lived with his family.
Similarly, his brother’s Facebook account has been deleted, as have various social media, and UK LinkedIn profiles connected to his sister, though she now appears to have a new, Kuwait-based LinkedIn page.

Jihadi John's former university was a 'hotbed of radicalism' where students 'celebrated 9/11', it has been claimed.
A former student has lifted the lid on his time at the University of Westminster - as it's also revealed a talk by a Muslim hate preacher has been postponed due to 'security concerns'.
Haitham al-Haddad was set to speak tonight, but the event will not go ahead as planned after it was revealed 'Jihadi John' studied computer programming at the university.

‘The university was nothing less than a hotbed of radicalism when I was there.
‘Universities across the country, the University of Westminster in particular, are being targeted by radical recruiters.'
A spokesperson from the University of Westminster said: 'We take these allegations very seriously. We condemn any behaviour that promotes terrorism and violence on any of our campuses.
'We have strict policies to promote tolerance among our 20,000 student community, who come to study from over 150 nations.
'Any student found to be engaging in radicalised activity would be referred to disciplinary procedures.
'As a London-based university operating in a diverse multi-cultural city, we are fully aware of all the influences within this international city. With other universities in London, we are working together to implement the Government’s Prevent strategy to tackle extremism.
'We strongly encourage anyone who is concerned about radicalisation to speak out and contact the Student Support and Well-being team. The safety and security of our students is our foremost concern.'

Dr Al-Haddad's planned visit to the university sparked anger and a petition launched by the university’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) society opposing his visit was signed by more than 3,000 people.
He has advocated that gays should be outlawed and has also praised terror boss Osama bin Laden. He has also spoken out in favour of female genital mutilation.
He has claimed Jewish people are descended from 'apes and pigs' and says people who leave Islam should be executed, although he has claimed in the past his comments have been misinterpreted.

[h=3]RAHEEM KASSAM'S ACCOUNT[/h]I did not know him, he would have been two years behind me, but I am utterly, utterly unsurprised.
The university was nothing less than a hotbed of radicalism when I was there.
Are the conditions at Westminster right for the radicalisation of someone like him? The answer is yes, 100 per cent.
I once walked into a meeting of the Islamic Society where they were clapping and cheering the events of 9/11.
It was at that moment in my life I realised I wanted to set up an organisation in my life to tackle it.
Having been brought up in a Muslim household and then seeing that happening is pretty galling stuff.’
Universities across the country, the University of Westminster in particular, are being targeted by radical recruiters.
These guys [students] are being professionally radicalised. They tried it with me and they try it with any Muslim.
I remember very vividly how I would get cornered by three or four Somali guys - students in the class with me who were dressed in non-western clothing – and they would say I must come along to the Islamic Society meetings otherwise I’m not a proper Muslim.
When you are 18-years-old and a practising Muslim you feel inclined to go.
I went along and saw what was happening and it absolutely disgusted me.

[h=1]The Jihadi John apologists: Outrage as human rights group describes ISIS executioner as a 'beautiful, extremely kind and gentle young man' - then blames BRITAIN for radicalising him[/h]
  • Asim Qureshi helped name his friend Mohammed Emwazi as Jihadi John
  • Mr Qureshi said that MI5 had harassed Emwazi and help radicalise him
  • Campaigner was tearful as he described him as 'extremely kind and gentle'
  • He added that 'the man I knew would never hurt a single person'
  • 'When are we going to finally learn that when we treat people as if they're outsiders they will look for belonging elsewhere'
  • Comments caused fury from people who believe MI5 were doing their job
  • CAGE broadcast was on Sky News for 58 minutes without interruption and the BBC showed it for 52 minutes

The group who helped name Mohammed Emwazi as ISIS executioner Jihadi John caused outrage today after blaming MI5 for pushing him towards his killing spree in Syria.
Asim Qureshi, research director at the rights group CAGE, described the world's most wanted man as 'extremely kind, extremely gentle and the most humble young person that I ever knew'.
At a press conference today Mr Qureshi was close to tears as he said Emwazi, who is linked to a string of executions of ISIS prisoners, 'was such a beautiful man'.
Mr Qureshi said he was radicalised after the security services harassed him and alienated him because 'the man I knew would never hurt a single person.'
He said: 'When are we going to finally learn that when we treat people as if they're outsiders, they are going to feel like outsiders and they will look for belonging elsewhere.'

The first picture of British ISIS executioner Jihadi John's face as an adult has been published - from his time as a model student at the University of Westminster.
The world's most wanted man was named yesterday as Mohammed Emwazi, a British 'known wolf' who grew up in west London and fled to Syria under the nose of MI5 in 2012.
This afternoon this picture - the first of him as an adult - emerged from his time at the University of Westminster, where he studied Information Systems with Business Management from 2006 to 2009.
Wearing a Pittsburgh Pirates baseball cap and sporting a goatee beard, the photograph shows eyes which clearly belong to the Islamic State's executioner-in-chief.
But when this photo was taken he was a model student at a London university - his academic record shows he passed all but two of the modules for his degree, gaining a 2:2.

Mohammed Emwazi's academic record from his time at the University of Westminster shows he passed all but two modules of his degree

The record shows he passed the majority of his modules, including Introducing Mathematics, Gender, Ethnicity and Cultural Representations, Project Management, Business Organisation and Communication and Interactive Management, but was awarded a 'condoned credit; retake' status for modules in Business Information Systems and Managing Business Organisations.
The picture of Emwazi as an adult and his academic record were first revealed by Sky News this afternoon.
It has also been revealed Jihadi John was once a fun-loving ten-year-old who adored The Simpsons, Playstation games and eating chips, and dreamt of becoming a Premier League star scoring goals for Manchester United by the age of 30.

[h=3]JIHADI JOHN'S SIBLINGS: BROTHER FOLLOWS HATE PREACHER AND SISTER WROTE OF HOODED KILLER[/h]The younger brother of Mohammed Emwazi is a small-time criminal with hardline and outspoken Islamist views.

Student: Emwazi's 19-year-old sister was a prefect and studied cinematography at A-Level

It emerged yesterday that the 21-year-old from London follows a radical Muslim cleric – while his younger sister is a media student who once made a short film about a 'hooded serial killer'.
Emwazi's brother – whom the Mail had decided not to name – is a member of the Woolwich Dawah group, who once harboured the killers of Lee Rigby.
The university graduate, who like his sibling has taken a keen interest in computer networks, listens to the teachings of radical preacher Khalid Yasin.
Several of his friends use images similar to those used by extremists online and last night at least one of his 68 friends on Facebook was displaying the black flag of Islamic State.
He has also commented on videos, supporting one in which a woman is mocked for praying in a clumsy manner.
He has at least two convictions, for handling a stolen police bicycle and a string of thefts at a shopping village – and has twice been hauled back for repeated breaches of community orders.
His 19-year-old sister, like Emwazi, went to Quintin Kynaston school where she was a prefect and studied cinematography at A-Level.
Her film, a 'thriller' depicting a hooded man chasing a girl through a school, was made as part of her coursework and contained themes about bullying.
Writing about her studies online, the teenager – whom the Mail is not naming and whose face we are obscuring to protect her privacy – said: 'It gives out a hidden message about ... how we humans shouldn't stereotype people and pick on them because of what background they come from or the colour of their skin nor what they believe in. Also...that revenge is NEVER the right answer.'
She is now thought to be studying media studies at Middlesex University.

Extremist: Haitham al-Haddad's speech has been postponed

Haitham al-Haddad was set to speak tonight, but the event will not go ahead as planned after it was revealed 'Jihadi John' studied computer programming at the university.
Today, the terrorist was named as a university graduate from London who was able to flee to Syria despite being on an MI5 terror watch list.

[h=3]IMELINE OF TERROR: HOW JIHADI JOHN JOINED THE RANKS OF ISIS[/h]
A lobby group has released an extensive report on its contact with Mohammed Emwazi - the man reports have named as Islamic State militant Jihadi John.
Cage, which deals with people who believe they have been mistreated at the hands of British authorities in anti-terror operations, claims it first came into contact with Emwazi in 2009 after he was contacted by MI5 on a safari holiday to Tanzania.
The group claim Emwazi's family was told he had travelled to Syria in 2013. Here is a timeline of events in Emwazi's life as reported by Cage:
