Jets-Giants Super Bowl 2011: 5 Reasons It Just Might Happen

It's very rare but right now, the Jets and Giants are the two best teams in football. It has nothing to do with debates about rosters and who has more talent or the better quarterback. It simply is a fact with both teams currently being number one seeds in their conferences.
The Giants are 5-2 in the NFC along with the Atlanta Falcons. The Giants have the better conference record to break the tie.
The Jets are 5-1 in the AFC along with the Patriots and Steelers. The Jets beat the Patriots and have a better conference record than the Steelers to break both ties.
So, is it possible that this could be the all-New York Super Bowl season? It's very possible and here are five reasons why Dallas could be host to the New York Bowl on February 6.

5. Jets Have a Soft Remaining Schedule

The Jets have had a fabulous season so far, backing up all of their preseason talk. After losing the opening game of the season to the Ravens at home, they've won five straight games.
They've done it for the most part either without their star corner back Darrelle Revis or with him being limited during games. That just shows that he isn't needed in order to win games all the time. Now, Revis says he's 100 percent healthy entering this week's game against the Packers. If that's true, imagine how tough the Jets would be?
Sitting atop the AFC East with all the tiebreakers so far, the Jets barring a collapse will make the playoffs. Their remaining schedule should help them out too. Out of their final 10 games, only two should be tough. Road games at the Patriots and Steelers, who coincidentally have the same 5-1 record as the Jets.
If the Jets can get a first-round bye and/or host the AFC Championship Game, the road to the Super Bowl won't be too difficult.
4. Jets Defense Hasn't Peaked Yet and Offense Is Getting Better

Yes, this Jets team is great. There's no debating that right now—unless you're a Jets hater. With that being said, the team isn't even dominant yet. You must be wondering how a 5-1 team isn't dominant.
Well, their defense is not even close to being what it was last season. Part of that has to do with Darrelle Revis and part of that has to do with not getting to the quarterback. The Jets ranked first in overall defense last season but this season, they're ranked 12th. They're only 22nd against the pass and they obviously will improve with Revis getting healthier.
On the offensive side of the ball, the Jets are only getting better. Their quarterback Mark Sanchez has been efficient but still not elite and receiver Santonio Holmes is still getting adjusted to his role.
With guys like LaDainian Tomlinson and Dustin Keller already having fine seasons, and with Braylon Edwards actually catching balls, having an elite Holmes will make the offense scary. The Jets are already fourth in the league in points scored, and they're just getting hot.
3. Jets Winning Games They Wouldn't Have Last Season

Last season, the Jets lost a ton of heartbreakers. The story was the same—lead or be close late and give up the big play.
A couple of examples were losing a Monday night game in Miami late, losing an overtime game to the Bills at home, losing to the Jaguars at home by a field goal, and the biggest one—losing to the Falcons at home on a game-winning touchdown pass. The Jets just could never make the big stop to get the win.
This season, it's a different story. Each of their last two wins have been the exact opposite of last season's debacles.
In Week 5, the Jets made a game against the Vikings look very interesting. They had a 12-0 lead at one point, but let it close to 22-20 by the fourth quarter. They made a big defensive play though for a pick-six to win, 29-20.
In their last game in Week 6, the Jets trailed, 20-17, to the Broncos but their quarterback made a huge play. It was Sanchez's final shot on fourth down and he hauled the ball down field to induce a pass interference of Santonio Holmes. The Jets would get a touchdown to win the game after a defensive stop.
They're just a different team this season and if they're going to be tough late, it'll be tough to beat them
2. Giants Defense Is Flat Out Nasty

The Giants defense was so bad last season, they got their defensive coordinator fired. They basically quit in the final games of the season. This season, don't you dare mess with them.
The Giants have knocked out five quarterbacks so far in only seven games. One guy could be lost for the season. The following QBs have been knocked out by opposing Giants' linebackers: Matt Moore, Jay Cutler, Todd Collins, Shaun Hill, and Tony Romo. That's just being bullies. What it also is, is letting everyone in the league know they're for real.
There were doubts about the Giants' defense entering this season and even after the first couple of games. Grant it two of the teams they've faced have bad offensive lines (Bears and Cowboys) but they're still tough. Osi Umenyiora has bounced back with a monster season having recorded eight sacks which is more than one per game.
The Giants' defense is ranked second in the league and their offense isn't too shabby so at this point, who's stopping them?
1. The NFC Is a Terrible Conference

Let's face it. The NFC is atrocious. Other than the Giants and Falcons, the rest of the bunch is so bad you may have a 7-9 team make the playoffs. Okay, maybe that's a stretch, but 8-8 is certainly possible.
Right now, you can make the argument that the Giants and Falcons will meet in the NFC Championship Game. Just look at what's happened so far to everyone else.
The Eagles were rolling until Michael Vick got hurt, although he's going to play this week. Nobody believes the 4-3 Bears are legitimate and the 4-3 Packers are without two key players on offense.
The Buccaneers are 4-2, but yet again, they're the Buccaneers. The Seahwaks are in the same boat as Tampa Bay—4-2 but still weak—and the 49ers have been the NFL's biggest disappointment so far at 1-6.
Then you have the case of three other powerhouses or at least they were thought to be that. The Cowboys and Vikings have flopped and the defending Super Bowl champion Saints are average.
So, that leaves you with the Giants and Falcons. Who would you take in that game? I'd take the Giants and their menacing defense.
