The New York Jets fired general manager Mike Maccagnan on Wednesday and have named head coach Adam Gase as the acting GM.

"Mike helped to execute the strategic vision of the organization during the last four seasons and especially the past few months," Jets CEO Christopher Johnson said in a statement. "However, I came to the decision to make a change after much thought and a careful assessment of what would be in the best long-term interests of the New York Jets."

The Jets also fired vice president of player personnel Brian Heimerdinger, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter and Jeff Darlington.

Johnson said he would immediately start a search for a new general manager.

Maccagnan had been the Jets' GM since January 2015 after spending the previous 14 years with the Houston Texans.

The Jets went 10-6 in their first season under Maccagnan and former coach Todd Bowles, but have struggled through three consecutive losing seasons since.

Maccagnan, however, has overseen the construction of a promising core of young players, including quarterback Sam Darnold, safety Jamal Adams and defensice lineman Leonard Williams.

News out of New York is the Jets have fired their general manager, Mike Maccagnan and VP of Player Personnel Brian Heimerdinger. This is per NFL reporter Adam Schefter. On the surface, news like this is huge from an NFL standpoint, but should it matter to the Pittsburgh Steelers? Perhaps not but according to Jets reporter Manish Mehta, a former Steelers could have been part of the reason why.
According to Mehta, head coach Adam Gase and Maccagnan seriously disagreed about the signing of running back Le’Veon Bell. The Jets signed Bell to a huge free-agent contract in the offseason.

Gase will be the interim general manager for now and this news can’t be great for Bell, knowing his head coach didn’t want him and the team is now in his full control. This is a situation we will be sure to monitor so if you don’t want to hear about Bell, you might want to bypass the updates. The Steelers take on the Jets on the road in Week 16.

Sam Darnold could end up being the next Tim Couch.

I still swear that Tim Couch could have been great but there was just too much dysfunction and horrible coaching in the organization to overcome.

Gase wants his people in. Surprising to see a HC win the power struggle vs the person who hired him.
