THey got rid of some baggage on defense, and have Julius Peppers healthy again. The same can be said on the Offensive side of the ball with a healthy Delhomme, and a very tough running RB tandem in Williams and Stewart.
Norv Turner is not a very good coach IMO and Jon Fox will have his guys running through a wall in this game. Carolina also has several solid receivers to take the place of SSmith. Although he can never be replaced they have much more depth now.
I also see improvement on both lines for the Panthers, and with the move of a matured Jordan Gross to LT, Delhomme will have the ultimate pass protector and the RBs some nice holes, as Fox has committed this team to the bruising hard nose running attack, much like the days of their Super Bowl run. It is also the perfect way to attack a 3-4 defense, and with Merriman being slowed is a big plus.
That being said, what argument can be made for San Diego? Gates is ailing, Merriman is ailing, and they have basically the same team as last year, who just happens to play in the worst division in football.
What more can I say? Haha.

Also, I dont love either side of the San Diego game.
I rank teams down to the thousandth of a decimal using a top secret vietnamese formula created by yours truly >:X Haha. Well, actually 1.00 (is the best) and I rank them down to the .001
PITT: .553
HOU: .541
This is without HFA I suppose... but I only use that kind of as a last factor in determining the "rally" state of mind. I've only seen one other system that is like what I use but I can't tell you what it's called >:\ Nor do I have examples.

They still have the same team they had last year.. Have no big play maker on offense for in the first week and the defense is nothing special.
Peppers is healthy and I'm hoping for a comeback. Sorry I can't go in-depth right now because I don't have all my numbers and notes to spill it out. Even if worse comes to worse... CAR will be down what... 13 points? 16 points? And all I will need is a garbage TD and I'll be okay--even if I have to sweat it out.

Carolina
Houston
Miami
Three solid winners. So much of the early NFL season is based on previous years perception. These three teams are going to be the most improved in the NFL this year and I think Carolina and Houston both make a run for their conference championships.
Carolina has DJ Hackett (fmr Seahawk) so you know he's good > Houston I am waiting to see. Miami will win more than one game, hopefully lol. Although according to preseason play (most without Favre) I have the Dolphins favored over the Jets but I'm not gonna count out Favre so that is why I am staying out of that game.
